Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Diplodoc extension: floating feedback form for selected text

Readme

@a.shulman/text-feedback-extension

NPM version

Diplodoc CLI extension that adds a floating feedback button when users select text in the documentation. Clicking the button opens a form where the user can report a typo, incorrect information, or other issue with the selected fragment.

Installation

npm install @a.shulman/text-feedback

Usage

Register the extension in your Diplodoc build script:

import {Build} from '@diplodoc/cli';
import {Extension as TextFeedback} from '@a.shulman/text-feedback';

const build = new Build();
build.apply(new TextFeedback());
build.run();

Or in .yfm config (if your build script supports extension loading):

textFeedback: https://your-backend.example.com/feedback

CLI flag

yfm build -i ./docs -o ./build --text-feedback https://your-backend.example.com/feedback

Configuration

Short form (endpoint URL only)

textFeedback: https://your-backend.example.com/feedback

Full form

textFeedback:
  endpoint: https://your-backend.example.com/feedback
  privacyPolicyUrl: https://your-site.example.com/privacy  # optional
  metrika:
    counterId: 12345678
    goals:
      button: my-feedback-button   # default: selection-feedback-button
      submit: my-submit             # default: selection-submit
      cancel: my-cancel             # default: selection-cancel

When privacyPolicyUrl is set, a personal data consent checkbox appears below the contact field. The submit button is disabled until the checkbox is ticked (only when the contact field is filled).

Config type

type TextFeedbackObject = {
    endpoint: string;
    privacyPolicyUrl?: string; // URL shown in the personal data consent checkbox
    metrika?: {
        counterId: number;
        goals?: {
            button?: string;
            submit?: string;
            cancel?: string;
        };
    };
};

type Config = {
    textFeedback?: string | TextFeedbackObject;
};

What it does

  • Injects a browser script (_extensions/feedback/feedback.js) into every generated HTML page
  • When a user selects 5+ characters of text within .dc-doc-page__content, a floating button appears near the selection
  • The button auto-hides after 5 seconds if not clicked
  • Clicking opens a form with issue type options (typo, incorrect info, missing example, bad graphics, other) plus optional comment and contact fields
  • On submit, sends a POST request to the configured endpoint:
{
    "url": "https://docs.example.com/page",
    "title": "Page title",
    "suggestion": "typo",
    "selected_text": "the selected fragment",
    "comment": "optional comment",
    "contact": "optional contact"
}
  • Shows a success/error popup after submission
  • Enforces a 7-second cooldown between submissions
