Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Rate-limiting middleware (rate-limiter-flexible) — in-memory or Redis-backed, with 429 + RateLimit headers

Readme

@agentback/extension-rate-limit

Rate-limiting middleware backed by rate-limiter-flexible — in-memory or Redis-backed, with 429 + RateLimit-* headers.

Mounts an Express middleware on the REST server that limits requests per key (client IP by default) over a sliding window. Memory store by default; pass an ioredis-compatible client to share limits across instances. Follows the same install*/mount* pattern as extension-health and extension-metrics.

pnpm add @agentback/extension-rate-limit

What it provides

| Export | Purpose | | ------------------------------------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ | | installRateLimit(app, options?) | Resolve the REST server and mount rate limiting. Call before app.start(). | | mountRateLimit(server, options?) | Mount on a RestServer's Express app directly (supports path to scope it). | | createRateLimitMiddleware(options?) | The raw Express RequestHandler for manual mounting. | | RateLimitOptions | points, durationSecs, blockSecs, keyPrefix, keyGenerator, skip, store, headers, statusCode, message. | | RateLimiterRes | Re-export from rate-limiter-flexible. |

Usage

import {RestApplication} from '@agentback/rest';
import {installRateLimit} from '@agentback/extension-rate-limit';

const app = new RestApplication({});
app.restController(MyController);

// 100 requests / 60s per client IP (in-memory).
const installed = await installRateLimit(app, {points: 100, durationSecs: 60});
// installed.uninstall() turns the limiter into a pass-through

// Redis-backed + a custom key, scoped to /api:
await installRateLimit(app, {
  path: '/api',
  points: 1000,
  durationSecs: 60,
  store: redisClient, // ioredis-compatible
  keyGenerator: req => (req.headers['x-api-key'] as string) ?? req.ip ?? 'anon',
  skip: req => req.path === '/health',
});

await app.start();

On the limit being exceeded the middleware responds 429 (configurable) with {error: {statusCode, message}} and sets Retry-After. Every response carries RateLimit-Limit / RateLimit-Remaining / RateLimit-Reset. Store failures (e.g. Redis down) fail open — requests pass rather than 500.

Layering

Depends on: @agentback/rest, rate-limiter-flexible, express. Mounts as ordinary Express middleware via server.expressApp.use(...), so it runs ahead of route handlers. For finer control, compose createRateLimitMiddleware yourself.
