Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Headless schema-driven forms: parse, Valibot validation, and useSchemaForm

Readme

@aidanbell/schema-form

Experimental 0.1.x — API may change before 1.0.

Headless schema-driven forms for React: parse a JSON field definition, build a Valibot validator, and wire React Hook Form via useSchemaForm.

Bring your own UI — this package does not render inputs.

Install

pnpm add @aidanbell/schema-form valibot react react-dom react-hook-form @hookform/resolvers

Peers: react / react-dom ≥18.2, valibot ^1.4.2, react-hook-form ^7.50, @hookform/resolvers ≥5.0.1.

Built validation schemas implement Standard Schema v1, so validationSchema from useSchemaForm (or buildFormValidationSchema) can be passed to any Standard Schema-aware consumer — not just React Hook Form.

Quickstart

import {
  parseFormDefinition,
  useSchemaForm,
} from "@aidanbell/schema-form";

const parsed = parseFormDefinition({
  schemaVersion: 1,
  title: "Invite",
  fields: [
    { name: "email", type: "email", label: "Email", required: true },
    { name: "age", type: "number", label: "Age" },
  ],
});

if (!parsed.success) {
  throw new Error(parsed.error);
}

export function InviteForm() {
  const { fields, form, handleSubmit } = useSchemaForm({
    definition: parsed.data,
    onSubmit: (values) => {
      console.log(values);
    },
  });

  return (
    <form onSubmit={handleSubmit}>
      {fields.map((field) => (
        <label key={field.name}>
          {field.label ?? field.name}
          <input {...form.register(field.name)} />
          {form.formState.errors[field.name] && (
            <span>{String(form.formState.errors[field.name]?.message)}</span>
          )}
        </label>
      ))}
      <button type="submit">Submit</button>
    </form>
  );
}

API

| Export | Role | |--------|------| | parseFormDefinition | Validate a form definition (object or JSON string). Never throws; returns ParseResult. | | formatParseError | Format parse issues into a readable string. | | buildFormValidationSchema | Build a Valibot object schema from FieldDefinition[]. | | getDefaultValues | Derive RHF-friendly defaults (defaultValue or type fallbacks). | | useSchemaForm | Headless hook: Valibot resolver + defaults + optional onSubmit. |

Types: FormDefinition, FieldDefinition, FieldType, ParseResult, ParseIssue, UseSchemaFormOptions, UseSchemaFormResult, FormValidationSchema.

Full field contract: see SCHEMA.md in the monorepo.

Empty-value semantics

  • Optional text-like fields (string, email, password, textarea, select, radio) use '' when empty.
  • Optional number fields use undefined when empty (never coerced to 0).
  • boolean defaults to false; a required boolean must be true.
