Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

@akcodeworks/svelte-listen

v0.0.1

Published

A SvelteKit action to listen to events outside of an element.

Readme

svelte-listen

A tiny Svelte 5 attachment for keyboard shortcuts. Bind global key combos with a single {@attach ...} and get automatic cleanup.

  • Works with the new {@attach ...} syntax
  • Adds/removes the window keydown listener automatically
  • Shortcut strings look like Ctrl+Shift+K
  • Fully typed with helper shortcut types

Installation

npm install @akcodeworks/svelte-listen
# pnpm add @akcodeworks/svelte-listen
# yarn add @akcodeworks/svelte-listen

Peer dependency: svelte@^5.0.0.

Quick start

<script lang="ts">
  import { listener } from '@akcodeworks/svelte-listen';
</script>

<button
  {@attach listener({
    Enter: (e) => {
      e.preventDefault();
      console.log('Pressed Enter anywhere');
    },
    'Ctrl+Shift+K': () => console.log('Pressed Ctrl+Shift+K')
  })}
>
  Press me
</button>

The attachment will:

  • Register a global keydown listener for any shortcuts you specify.
  • Clean everything up automatically when the element is destroyed.

Shortcut syntax

Shortcut keys use the KeyboardEvent.key names and a +-separated list of modifiers:

  • Single key: "Escape", "K", "F2", "ArrowUp"
  • With modifiers: "Ctrl+K", "Alt+ArrowDown", "Ctrl+Shift+L"

Use uppercase letters for single-character keys; the helper normalizes casing for you.

API

listener<T extends HTMLElement>(shortcuts?: ShortcutHandlers): Attachment<T>

  • shortcuts: A map of ShortcutString to handler.
  • Returns a Svelte attachment that can be used with {@attach ...} on any element. The element reference is unused but required by Svelte's {@attach ...} contract.

Types are exported for convenience:

import type { ShortcutString, KeyboardEventKey, ShortcutHandlers } from '@akcodeworks/svelte-listen';

Development

  • Install deps: npm install
  • Run the demo app: npm run dev -- --open
  • Tests: npm test
  • Lint/format: npm run lint and npm run format
  • Build package: npm run build (runs svelte-package and publint)

Notes

  • Keyboard shortcuts are bound at window level on keydown.
  • Call event.preventDefault() inside your shortcut handler if you need to suppress the browser default for that key combo.
