Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Table of Contents

Features

  • 🎨 MUI Components: Automatically uses MUI components (Typography, Link, Table, etc.) for rendering.
  • 📝 GitHub Flavored Markdown: Includes remark-gfm for tables, task lists, and more.
  • 🆔 Heading IDs: Includes remark-heading-id for custom header IDs.
  • 💻 Syntax Highlighting: Built-in syntax highlighting using prism-react-renderer with GitHub themes.
  • 🛠️ Customizable: Override default components or add your own remark plugins.

Installation

To install @alfredo.salzillo/mui-markdown:

npm install @alfredo.salzillo/mui-markdown

or with yarn:

yarn add @alfredo.salzillo/mui-markdown

Usage

import MuiMarkdown from '@alfredo.salzillo/mui-markdown';

const markdown = `
# Hello World
This is a **bold** text and a [link](https://mui.com).

\`\`\`ts
const hello = "world";
console.log(hello);
\`\`\`
`;

function App() {
  return (
    <MuiMarkdown>
      {markdown}
    </MuiMarkdown>
  );
}

Customizing Prism Themes

You can import and use different Prism themes. githubDark is the default theme, but githubLight is also available:

import MuiMarkdown from '@alfredo.salzillo/mui-markdown';
import { githubLight } from '@alfredo.salzillo/mui-markdown/prism-themes/github-light';

function App() {
  return (
    <MuiMarkdown prismTheme={githubLight}>
      {markdown}
    </MuiMarkdown>
  );
}

Customizing Components

You can override default components by passing a components prop. This is useful if you want to change the style of a specific element:

import MuiMarkdown from '@alfredo.salzillo/mui-markdown';
import { Typography } from '@mui/material';

function App() {
  return (
    <MuiMarkdown
      components={{
        h1: ({ children }) => <Typography variant="h4" color="primary">{children}</Typography>,
      }}
    >
      # This will be rendered as an H4 in primary color
    </MuiMarkdown>
  );
}

Adding Remark Plugins

You can add additional remark plugins using the remarkPlugins prop:

import MuiMarkdown from '@alfredo.salzillo/mui-markdown';
import remarkEmoji from 'remark-emoji';

function App() {
  return (
    <MuiMarkdown remarkPlugins={[remarkEmoji]}>
      Hello :dog:!
    </MuiMarkdown>
  );
}

Passing React Markdown Options

You can pass additional props to the underlying react-markdown component using reactMarkdownOptions:

import MuiMarkdown from '@alfredo.salzillo/mui-markdown';

function App() {
  return (
    <MuiMarkdown
      reactMarkdownOptions={{
        skipHtml: true,
        unwrapDisallowed: true,
      }}
    >
      # No HTML here <span>test</span>
    </MuiMarkdown>
  );
}

Props

| Prop | Type | Description | | --- | --- | --- | | children | string | The markdown content to render. | | remarkPlugins | PluggableList | Additional remark plugins to use. | | components | Components | Custom component overrides for react-markdown. | | prismTheme | PrismTheme | Prism theme for code blocks. Defaults to githubDark. | | reactMarkdownOptions | Options | Additional options to pass to react-markdown. |
