Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Continuous compliance engine for SOC 2 & ISO 27001 (AWS & GitHub)

Readme

Kanit 🛡️

Production-ready open-source continuous compliance engine for SOC 2 and ISO 27001. Evaluates real AWS infrastructure and GitHub repositories, verifies evidence integrity using SHA-256 digests, provides automated remediation instructions, and exports auditor-ready reports in Terminal, JSON, Markdown, HTML, and pure JavaScript PDF.

Key Features

  • SOC 2 & ISO 27001 Control Mapping: Every check maps directly to Trust Services Criteria (CC6.1–CC8.1) and ISO/IEC 27001:2022 clauses (A.5–A.8).
  • Real SDKs with Deterministic Mock Fallback: Production @aws-sdk/client-* and @octokit/rest integrations that run offline with --mock or KANIT_MOCK=1 when credentials are absent.
  • Tamper-Evident SHA-256 Audit Trail: Canonicalized JSON evidence hashing ensures auditor verification.
  • Pure JavaScript PDF Generation: Built with pdf-lib without any native binaries, Puppeteer, or canvas dependencies.
  • Automated Remediation Engine: Concrete AWS CLI, GitHub CLI, and Terraform definitions for every failing control.
  • CI/CD Native: GitHub Action composite workflow and sub-second CLI scan evaluation.

Installation

# Global CLI install
npm install -g kanit

# Or run via npx
npx kanit scan --mock

Usage

Quick Scan (Demo / Mock Mode)

kanit scan --mock

Full Audit Against Real AWS & GitHub

Ensure AWS_ACCESS_KEY_ID, AWS_SECRET_ACCESS_KEY, AWS_REGION, and GITHUB_TOKEN are in your environment:

kanit scan --format terminal

Generate Auditor Reports

# Export PDF Report
kanit scan --mock --format pdf --output compliance-audit.pdf

# Export Markdown Report for PR / Issue comments
kanit scan --mock --format markdown --output AUDIT.md

# Export JSON for SIEM / Data Lakes

CI/CD Quality Gate

Fail pipeline if compliance drops below 90% or if any CRITICAL issue is detected:

kanit scan --fail-under 90 --fail-on-severity CRITICAL

Remediating Findings
