Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

v0.1.2

Published

AllStak OpenTelemetry OTLP JSON exporter (beta). Batches, retries, and redacts sensitive attributes before sending spans to AllStak.

Readme

@allstak/otel

AllStak OpenTelemetry exporter for Node.js. Converts OpenTelemetry spans to OTLP JSON and sends them to AllStak.

Install

npm install @allstak/otel @opentelemetry/sdk-node @opentelemetry/auto-instrumentations-node

Setup

import { NodeSDK } from '@opentelemetry/sdk-node';
import { getNodeAutoInstrumentations } from '@opentelemetry/auto-instrumentations-node';
import { AllStakOtelExporter } from '@allstak/otel';

const sdk = new NodeSDK({
  traceExporter: new AllStakOtelExporter({
    apiKey: process.env.ALLSTAK_API_KEY!,
    environment: process.env.NODE_ENV ?? 'production',
    release: process.env.ALLSTAK_RELEASE,
    serviceName: 'api',
  }),
  instrumentations: [getNodeAutoInstrumentations()],
});

sdk.start();

Manual exporter

import { AllStakOtelExporter } from '@allstak/otel';

const exporter = new AllStakOtelExporter({
  apiKey: process.env.ALLSTAK_API_KEY!,
  environment: 'production',
  serviceName: 'worker',
});

exporter.export([span], (result) => {
  if (result.code !== 0) {
    console.error(result.error);
  }
});

await exporter.forceFlush();

Configuration

| Option | Description | | --- | --- | | apiKey | Project API key. | | serviceName | Service name attached to resource attributes. | | environment | Deployment environment. | | release | App version or commit SHA. | | maxBatchSize | Max spans per request. | | maxQueueSize | Max buffered spans. | | scheduledDelayMs | Flush interval. Set 0 for immediate export. | | exportTimeoutMs | Per-request timeout. | | maxRetries | Retry attempts for transient failures. | | redactKeys | Extra attribute keys to redact. | | sendDefaultPii | Allow personal data (email/IP) in free-text values. Default false. |

Privacy

The exporter scrubs sensitive data before sending spans, in two layers:

  • Key-name redaction — attribute keys that look sensitive (authorization, cookie, *_token, *_password, *_secret, api_key, jwt, bearer, …) have their value replaced with [REDACTED]. Add redactKeys for app-specific fields.
  • Value-pattern scrubbing — PII that leaks into free-text values (error messages, breadcrumb/log data, captured HTTP fields):
    • Always redacted: credit-card numbers that pass the Luhn checksum, and hyphenated US SSNs (ddd-dd-dddd).
    • Redacted unless sendDefaultPii: true: email addresses and IPv4/IPv6 addresses.

sendDefaultPii defaults to false for safe-by-default behavior. Set it to true only if you intentionally want emails/IPs in telemetry. Explicitly-set user fields (user.*), stack-frame file paths, URLs, and release/version/SDK fields are never value-scrubbed.

Troubleshooting

  • No traces: confirm your OpenTelemetry SDK is started before the app handles requests.
  • Missing service name: set serviceName on the exporter.
  • Process exits early: call await sdk.shutdown() or await exporter.forceFlush().
