Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

First-party browser client for Almasix Sonar realtime (native websocket server)

Readme

@almasix/sonar

First-party browser client for Sonar, Almasix's native realtime websocket server (/broadcasting/socket). Speaks the almasix:* frame protocol the server uses today. Does not require pusher-js.

Framework docs: Broadcasting.

Install

npm install @almasix/sonar

Develop

npm install
npm run build
npm test

Quick start

Point BROADCAST_CONNECTION at websocket or the sonar alias, then:

import Sonar from "@almasix/sonar";

const sonar = new Sonar({
  // defaults: same host as the page, path /broadcasting/socket
  // authEndpoint: "/broadcasting/auth",
});

await sonar.connect();

// Public
sonar.channel("announcements").listen("post.published", (data) => {
  console.log(data);
});

// Private — POSTs /broadcasting/auth with credentials/cookies
sonar.private(`authors.${name}`).listen("post.published", (data) => {
  console.log(data);
});

// Presence
sonar
  .join("rooms.lobby")
  .here((members) => console.log(members))
  .joining((member) => console.log("joined", member))
  .leaving((member) => console.log("left", member));

// Exclude this tab from broadcasts (server `to_others()`)
fetch("/posts", {
  method: "POST",
  headers: {
    "Content-Type": "application/json",
    ...sonar.socketIdHeader(), // { "X-Socket-ID": "..." }
  },
  body: JSON.stringify({ title: "Hi" }),
  credentials: "include",
});

Options

| Option | Default | Meaning | | --- | --- | --- | | wsUrl | derived | Full ws:// / wss:// URL | | host / port / path / scheme | page location, /broadcasting/socket | URL pieces when wsUrl is unset | | forceTLS | false | Prefer wss | | authEndpoint | /broadcasting/auth | Private / presence auth | | auth.headers / auth.params | — | Extra auth request fields | | reconnect | true | Reconnect on close |

Protocol

Compatible with Almasix Sonar frames:

  • server → almasix:connection_established { socket_id }
  • client → subscribe / unsubscribe / ping / client-*
  • server → almasix:subscription_succeeded, almasix:member_added / member_removed, broadcasts as { event, channel, data }

Optional: inbound pusher:* system names are normalized to almasix:* if a relay ever speaks them; the default client always sends Sonar/almasix shapes.

Release / publish

Cutting a release: create a GitHub Release on a vX.Y.Z tag. The publish workflow builds, tests, publishes to npm as @almasix/sonar, and attaches the npm pack tarball to the Release.

Secrets (repo Settings → Secrets)

| Secret | Used for | | --- | --- | | NPM_TOKEN | npm Automation or Granular token with publish on scope @almasix |

Create the npm org @almasix (if missing) and grant the token publish rights before the first release. Do not commit tokens.

Rehearse with Actions → Publish → Run workflow (dry_run: true) to build and test without npm publish.

Alternatives

If you prefer a hosted bus, see the Broadcasting docs for Pusher.js, Ably, and Socket.IO — those are supported alternatives, not the default.
