Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Glaze: shadcn/ui on Base UI, themed entirely through tokens.

Readme

Glaze

React components built on shadcn/ui and Base UI, themed entirely through CSS tokens. Swap the theme, mode or density with one attribute; the components never change.

Quick setup

Requires React 19 and Tailwind CSS 4 in your project.

In your project's folder, run:

npx @amit-kap/glaze init --theme maia

This installs the package, imports Glaze's styles and the theme into your main CSS file (the one with @import "tailwindcss"), and wraps your app in ThemeProvider. Leave out --theme to choose from a list. Other options: --mode light|dark|system, --density comfortable|compact, --config glaze.config.json (your own theme, see below), and --css / --entry to point at the files yourself. Running it again switches the theme.

If your entry file isn't the usual createRoot(…).render(<App />) shape, it prints the lines to add instead.

Set up by hand

npm install @amit-kap/glaze

1. Import the styles and a theme

In your main CSS file:

@import "@amit-kap/glaze/globals.css";
@import "@amit-kap/glaze/themes/maia.css";
  • globals.css includes Tailwind, the tokens and the default theme, Nova. Use it in place of your own @import "tailwindcss".
  • Import only the themes you use. Each one brings its own font.
  • Tailwind finds the classes inside Glaze's components on its own.

2. Wrap the app

import { ThemeProvider } from "@amit-kap/glaze/theme"

<ThemeProvider defaultTheme="maia" defaultMode="system">
  <App />
</ThemeProvider>

The viewer's choice is remembered in localStorage (storageKey, default "glaze"; false to turn it off). Without React, set the attributes on <html> yourself (see Switches).

3. Use components

import { Button } from "@amit-kap/glaze/components/button"
import { Card, CardContent, CardHeader, CardTitle } from "@amit-kap/glaze/components/card"

Switching at runtime

import { useTheme } from "@amit-kap/glaze/theme"

const { theme, setTheme, mode, setMode, resolvedMode, density, setDensity } = useTheme()
setTheme("lyra")
setMode("dark")        // "light" | "dark" | "system"
setDensity("compact")  // "comfortable" | "compact"

No flash on load

Add the inline script to <head> so the saved theme applies before the page paints. Pass the same options as the provider:

import { themeScript } from "@amit-kap/glaze/theme"

<script dangerouslySetInnerHTML={{ __html: themeScript({ defaultTheme: "maia" }) }} />

Switches

Three attributes on <html>, freely combined:

| Switch | Set with | Values | |---|---|---| | Theme | data-theme | none or nova (default), vega, maia, lyra, mira, luma, sera, rhea, or your own | | Mode | class="dark" | none (light), dark | | Density | data-density | none / comfortable, compact |

<html data-theme="maia" class="dark" data-density="compact">

They also work on any element, to theme just part of a page:

<section data-theme="sera">…</section>

Themes

Each theme expresses one of shadcn's styles as tokens.

| Theme | Character | |---|---| | nova (default) | Geist, 32px controls, 10px corners | | vega | Inter, taller controls, tighter corners | | maia | Figtree, pill controls, round menus, deep shadows | | lyra | JetBrains Mono, square, small type | | mira | Inter, compact controls, small type | | luma | Inter, pill controls, very round cards, lifted shadows | | sera | Taupe, Noto Sans + Playfair Display headings, square, tall controls | | rhea | Inter, soft rounded controls and cards |

Your own theme

The quickest way is a config: start from a built-in theme and change only what you need. Make one in the showcase's Customize panel (Config button), or write it:

{
  "version": 1,
  "name": "my-theme",
  "extends": "maia",
  "color": {
    "light": { "brand": "#0369a1", "brand-ink": "#ffffff" },
    "dark": { "brand": "#38bdf8", "brand-ink": "#082f49" }
  },
  "shape": { "radius": "0.5rem" }
}

Then npx @amit-kap/glaze init --config glaze.config.json generates my-theme.css beside your main CSS file and wires it in. To regenerate only the CSS: npx glaze theme glaze.config.json.

Writing one by hand

A theme is a CSS file that sets the required inputs for light and dark. Everything else (hover states, borders, sidebar colours, focus rings) is derived from them.

/* my-theme.css */
[data-theme="my-theme"] {
  --canvas: …;      /* app background */
  --surface: …;     /* cards, popovers, inputs */
  --ink: …;         /* primary text */
  --ink-muted: …;   /* secondary text */
  --line: …;        /* borders */
  --brand: …;       /* primary actions, focus */
  --brand-ink: …;   /* text on brand */
  --danger: …;
  --warning: …;
  --success: …;
  --info: …;
  --chart-1: …;
  --chart-2: …;
  --chart-3: …;
  --chart-4: …;
  --chart-5: …;
  --radius: …;      /* base corner radius */
}

[data-theme="my-theme"].dark,
.dark [data-theme="my-theme"],
[data-theme="my-theme"] .dark {
  /* the same colour inputs, dark values */
}

Optional inputs change the feel beyond colour: --shape-item, --shape-control, --shape-floating, --shape-container (corners per component family), --space-base (spacing and control height), --typeface-sans, --typeface-heading, --type-body (type), --elevation-raised, --elevation-floating, --elevation-modal (shadows) and --motion-base, --motion-ease-standard (motion). The theme files in @amit-kap/glaze/themes/ are complete examples.

Import it after globals.css and use data-theme="my-theme".
