Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

@anil-labs/google-places-autocomplete-element

Framework-free <gpa-autocomplete> custom element for address autocomplete, built on Google's Places API (New). Works in any framework — or none. Self-injects its stylesheet, so there's no separate CSS import.

Via a CDN — no build step

The package ships a standalone bundle (engine + styles baked in) that auto-registers <gpa-autocomplete>. One script tag, zero setup:

<script src="https://unpkg.com/@anil-labs/google-places-autocomplete-element"></script>

<gpa-autocomplete api-key="YOUR_API_KEY" placeholder="Search for an address…"></gpa-autocomplete>

<script>
  document.querySelector('gpa-autocomplete').addEventListener('select', (event) => {
    console.log(event.detail.place.formattedAddress)
  })
</script>

Pin a version in production (.../@anil-labs/[email protected]). The engine is bundled in, so don't also load -core separately.

With a bundler

npm install @anil-labs/google-places-autocomplete-element
<script type="module">
  import { defineGooglePlacesAutocompleteElement } from '@anil-labs/google-places-autocomplete-element'

  defineGooglePlacesAutocompleteElement('gpa-autocomplete')

  // Configure BEFORE inserting into the document (see the warning below).
  const el = document.createElement('gpa-autocomplete')
  el.setAttribute('api-key', 'YOUR_API_KEY')
  el.setAttribute('placeholder', 'Search for an address…')
  el.addEventListener('select', (event) => console.log(event.detail.place.formattedAddress))
  el.addEventListener('gpaerror', (event) => console.error(event.detail.error))
  document.body.append(el)
</script>

Configure before connecting. customElements.define() synchronously upgrades any matching tag already parsed into the document — building the element from a script and setting api-key after appending it may connect it first. Set attributes before append() (as above), or declare the tag with its attributes directly in HTML (as in the CDN example).

Full documentation: Web Component guide · getting started (Google Cloud setup) · API reference.

Attributes

api-key, debounce-ms, min-length, language-code, region-code (read once at first connection), plus value and placeholder (live-updatable at any time).

Events

select (detail: { place, suggestion }), gpaerror (detail: { error } — named to avoid ambiguity with the DOM's built-in error event).

SSR-safe

Safe to import during server-side rendering (Next.js/Nuxt/SvelteKit) — the module doesn't reference HTMLElement/customElements at load time, only when actually connected in a browser.
