Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Astro light/dark theme toggle. Pre-paint flicker fix, localStorage persistence, view-transition safe. Zero deps.

Install

npm install @arraypress/theme-switcher-astro

Use

Two components — <ThemeScript /> in <head> so the page paints with the correct theme on first load, and <ThemeToggle /> somewhere visible so the user can flip it.

---
import { ThemeScript, ThemeToggle } from '@arraypress/theme-switcher-astro';
---
<html>
  <head>
    <ThemeScript />
    <link rel="stylesheet" href="/styles/tokens.css" />
  </head>
  <body>
    <header>
      …
      <ThemeToggle />
    </header>
    <slot />
  </body>
</html>

Match the storage key and theme values across both if you customise:

<ThemeScript storageKey="wg-theme" />
<ThemeToggle storageKey="wg-theme" />

CSS contract

By default the component writes data-theme="light" on <html> for light mode and removes the attribute for dark mode — so the canonical token cascade is:

:root { /* default = dark tokens */ }
:root[data-theme="light"] { /* light tokens */ }

If you prefer the opposite (default = light), pass darkValue="dark" to both components — the toggle now writes data-theme="dark" on the dark side, and the cascade becomes:

:root { /* default = light tokens */ }
:root[data-theme="dark"] { /* dark tokens */ }

The component never injects any styles itself.

Icons

Inline SVGs are rendered for sun + moon. Hide one or the other based on the active state:

.theme-toggle .theme-toggle-moon { display: none; }
:root[data-theme="light"] .theme-toggle .theme-toggle-sun { display: none; }
:root[data-theme="light"] .theme-toggle .theme-toggle-moon { display: inline; }

The SVGs use currentColor so they tint with the button's color.

Props

| Prop | Default | Description | |---------------|------------------------------------|----------------------------------------------------------------------| | storageKey | 'theme' | localStorage key. App-specific keys avoid colliding with other libs. | | lightValue | 'light' | Value written to data-theme on the light side. | | darkValue | undefined | Value on the dark side. undefined removes the attribute entirely. | | id | 'theme-toggle' | Toggle button id. | | class | — | Extra classes for the button. | | label | 'Toggle dark / light mode' | aria-label for the button. |

Events

The toggle dispatches a themechange CustomEvent on document.documentElement after every flip:

document.documentElement.addEventListener('themechange', (e) => {
  console.log('theme is now', e.detail.theme); // 'light' | 'dark' | …
});
