Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Molen agent tooling: molen CLI and MCP server over a shared ops library

Readme

@bendyline/molen-tooling

The molen CLI and an MCP server over one shared ops library: scaffold a project, validate it, simulate it headlessly, assert on the result, and render a PNG — no browser window and no human in the loop.

Part of Molen, an AI-legible 3D experience engine: a deterministic headless kernel, a three.js client, and a dev loop an agent can drive end to end.

Install

npm i -g @bendyline/molen-tooling    # provides the `molen` executable
npx playwright install chromium # needed by every op that renders

Or add it to a project (npm i -D @bendyline/molen-tooling) and run npx molen … from there. Note the scope: the unscoped molen package on npm is unrelated to this one.

ESM only, Node >= 22.13. typescript is an optional peer dependency (>= 5.4) resolved from your project, not from here, so molen scripts check uses the same compiler your editor does.

Use

The inner loop. Each step prints structured, fixable text and exits non-zero on failure, so it composes into CI or an agent's turn:

npx @bendyline/molen-tooling new my-experience && cd my-experience
npm install # the scaffold lists this CLI and typescript as devDependencies

npx molen validate scenes/main.scene.json
npx molen scripts check
npx molen sim run main --ticks 30 --commands cmds.json --assert checks.json --hash
npx molen shot main --ticks 30 --out shot.png
tick: 30
hash: sha256:2fda347ff2efaa7f9110d4f89f3131b12326c45d08b8485052617f3fb29ba657
events: 0
physics: kinematics (cross-platform deterministic)
✓ 4/4 assertions passed

The hash is the determinism check: same build, same ticks, same hash. molen replay <fixture> compares a recorded command log tick by tick and names the first tick that diverges.

Start from a sample

The small samples ship inside this package as templates, so starting from one needs no clone of the engine repository. molen templates lists them (--json for the structured list); each scaffolds as a standalone npm project with its scene, scripts, headless tests and replay fixtures:

npx @bendyline/molen-tooling templates
npx @bendyline/molen-tooling new my-arena --template top-down-arena && cd my-arena
npm install && npm test && npm run dev

molen new prints the project's own headless loop, and every scaffolded project — template or starter — carries an AGENTS.md that points a coding agent at the version-locked docs bundle in node_modules/@bendyline/molen-tooling/dist/docs-src/llms.txt and at that loop.

What's in it

| Surface | For | |---|---| | the molen bin | 43 operations, including validate, sim run, sim watch, shot, frames, drive, play, replay, diff, new, templates, asset import/inspect/pack/stage/shot, pack build/inspect/verify/extract/fetch, project info, types list/check/reserve/gen/test, scripts check, material bake, uvpaint apply, worldgen preview/bake/stats, figure preview | | molen mcp | every operation but the file watcher, as MCP tools over stdio; drive_scene, play_experience, worldgen_preview and figure_preview return frames as images | | molen describe [op] | the machine-readable contract for every operation, CLI flags and MCP tool name side by side — the surface to build an agent against | | discovery, no source reading | molen schema list/get, molen components/component <name>, molen docs search <q> over the engine docs bundle shipped inside this package | | . (the ops library) | every op as a plain async (input) => output: validateAsset, runSimulation, screenshotScene, runReplayFile, driveScene, playExperience, rasterizeMaterial, checkScripts, generateTypes, importAsset, scaffoldExperience, listTemplates, … plus OPS_CATALOG, and diffImages/frameStats/compareGolden for your own image tests |

Ops that need content (entity types, a style pack, a region atlas) read it from content packs, never from npm packages: the project's project.json packs list (paths or pinned URLs), then MOLEN_PACKS, plus --pack on the worldgen commands. URL packs are cached in MOLEN_CACHE_DIR, and MOLEN_OFFLINE=1 never fetches. Molen's own packs are published at molen.dev: npx molen pack fetch https://molen.dev/packs/index.json downloads them into a project and pins them in project.json. molen pack build makes a pack of your own from a directory with a molen-pack.source.json.

The CLI and the MCP server act with the authority of the process that runs them. Path arguments are trusted user intent, read, written or imported as given wherever they point, and a scene's scripts and a project's setup module run in-process. To limit what an agent can reach, run the server in a process whose own permissions fit; see SECURITY.md.

Rendering ops (shot, frames, drive, play, asset shot, figure preview, worldgen preview) render in headless Chromium over a software-rasterized WebGL context, so a frame does not depend on the host GPU. That is why Playwright's browser download is a separate step.

Status

0.x. Nothing imports this package — it sits on top of the engine and releases whenever an engine package it depends on does, so new projects scaffold the newest versions. All logic lives in the ops library and the CLI and MCP server are thin mappings over it, which means new operations appear on both at once and OPS_CATALOG / molen describe stay the one description of them. Expect operations and flags to be added; existing output shapes are exercised by the repo's own tests but are not yet frozen.
