Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Berryn XLSX Validation Engine — Structural, OPC relationship, semantic XML, and headless consumer checks

Readme

@berryn/xlsx-validate

Multi-layer validation harness: Structural, OPC Relationship, Semantic XML, and Consumer Smoke tests.

npm version License: MIT Node.js TypeScript

Overview

@berryn/xlsx-validate executes rigorous, multi-stage verification against generated or migrated XLSX spreadsheet workbooks. It catches corrupt files, broken Open Packaging Conventions (OPC) relationship references, invalid XML payloads, and headless consumer repair prompts before artifacts reach production.

Installation

# Using pnpm
pnpm add @berryn/xlsx-validate

# Using npm
npm install @berryn/xlsx-validate

The 4 Validation Layers

    A[XLSX Container Buffer] --> Stage1[1. Structural Validation]

    Stage2 -->|Rels Graph Intact| Stage3[3. Semantic XML Validation]
    Stage3 -->|Schemas Valid| Stage4[4. Headless Consumer Smoke Test]
    Stage4 --> Passed[Validation Succeeded]
  1. Stage 1: Structural Integrity (validateStructuralIntegrity):

    • Decompresses archive under strict resource limit checks.
    • Asserts valid ZIP headers, non-zero file contents, and safe compression ratios (BRN-VAL-001).
  2. Stage 2: OPC Relationship Integrity (validateRelationshipIntegrity):

    • Parses _rels/.rels and part-specific .rels files.
    • Asserts all declared internal Relationship Target URIs exist physically within the container (BRN-VAL-002).
  3. Stage 3: Semantic XML Validation (validateSemanticContents):

    • Ensures core XML parts (xl/workbook.xml, xl/styles.xml, xl/worksheets/sheet*.xml) conform to OOXML expectations.
  4. Stage 4: Headless Consumer Smoke Test (runConsumerSmokeTest):

    • Optionally runs headless LibreOffice conversion in an isolated sandbox to detect real-world repair alerts (BRN-VAL-003).

Usage Examples

1. Structural Validation

import { readFileSync } from 'node:fs';
import { validateStructuralIntegrity } from '@berryn/xlsx-validate';

const buffer = readFileSync('workbook.xlsx');
const result = validateStructuralIntegrity(buffer);

console.log(`Passed: ${result.passed}`);
for (const diag of result.diagnostics) {
  console.log(`[${diag.severity}] ${diag.code}: ${diag.message}`);
}

2. OPC Relationship Validation

import { validateRelationshipIntegrity } from '@berryn/xlsx-validate';

const relsResult = validateRelationshipIntegrity(buffer);

if (!relsResult.passed) {
  console.error('Workbook contains dangling or broken OPC relationships:');
  for (const diag of relsResult.diagnostics) {
    console.error(`- ${diag.message}`);
  }
}

3. Headless Consumer Smoke Test

import { runConsumerSmokeTest } from '@berryn/xlsx-validate';

const smokeResult = runConsumerSmokeTest('/path/to/workbook.xlsx');
console.log(`Consumer Smoke Status: ${smokeResult.passed ? 'PASSED' : 'REPAIR_TRIGGERED'}`);

Exported Symbols

| Symbol | Type | Description | |---|---|---| | validateStructuralIntegrity | Function | Verifies container decompression, entry existence, and safety limits. | | validateRelationshipIntegrity | Function | Ensures all internal OPC relationship references resolve to actual container parts. | | validateSemanticContents | Function | Checks XML payload integrity and workbook structure. | | runConsumerSmokeTest | Function | Executes headless LibreOffice conversion to verify client compatibility. | | ValidationStageResult | Interface | Result schema containing passed, stageName, and diagnostics. |
