Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Basic UI lib

Readme

What's Yauil?

Yauil (standing for Yet Another UI Library, or Why Another UI Library?) is, as its name implies, a frontend framework/library.

It's a personnal porject with the objective of learning, designed to be lightweight a TypeScript-first.

Please don't use this in production

Motivation

This is basically an exercize for me as a junior dev. It will probably not be maintained.

A few things I've learned:

  • Extending functions
  • Complex DOM manipulations
  • Symbols as object keys (did you know they were non-enumerable by default? it took me weeks to figure it out!)
  • Proxies are tricky
  • "Best practices" sometimes make things much harder, and the gain's not that great with only ~600 LoC

A basic component

import { createComputed, createSignal, jsx } from "yauil";

function Counter() {
	const count = createSignal(0);
	const doubleCount = createComputed(() => count() * 2);

	console.log("This runs only once");

	return (
		<>
			<button onclick={() => count.set((val) => val + 1)}>+ 1</button>
			<p>
				{doubleCount} is the double of {count}
			</p>
		</>
	);
}

Yauil uses functions and JSX to create components. Contrary to React, functions are constructors that are only run once. Yauil uses no virtual DOM and uses signals to update the real DOM.

Signals, Computed & Stores

Simple reactive values may be created with createSignal. They may be used as-is in JSX:

const count = createSignal(0);
return <div>{count}</div>;

Signals are unwrapped by being called:

const signal = createSignal("hi!"); // signal is reactive
const value = signal(); // value is not

You can set a new value with the set method:

const count = createSignal(0);
count.set(1); // count's value is now 1;
count.set((current) => current + 1); // count's value is now 2;

Computed values are created with createComputed. It will detect any unwrapping in its constructor to know which signals to listen to.

const a = createSignal(1);
const b = createSignal(2);
const sum = createComputed(() => a() + b()); // sum will listen to a and b changes

More complex values may be created with createStore, which will lazily create sub-signals when needed.

const user = createStore({
	name: "John",
	age: "42",
});
const plainName = user().name; // not reactive
const reactiveName = user.name; // reactiveName is a signal

Built-in components

Yauil provides a couple built-in components, <Show /> and <For />

const show = createSignal(true);
return (
	<>
		<button onClick={() => show.set((current) => !current)}>Toggle</button>
		<Show when={show}>
			<p>This is a paragraph</p>
		</Show>
	</>
);
const fruits = createStore(["apple", "banana", "orange"]);
return (
	<For of={fruits}>
		{(fruit, index) => (
			<div>
				Fruit #{index}: {fruit}
			</div>
		)}
	</For>
);
