Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Layout debugging borders for React Native — depth-colored, touch-through, tap any label to inspect testIDs & styles. Part of Buoy devtools.

@buoy-gg/debug-borders

npm version npm downloads

See your React Native layout instead of guessing at it — depth-colored borders over every component, and tap any label to inspect its testID, styles, and exact position on-device.

Part of Buoy — devtools that live inside your React Native app. Install it and it auto-appears in the floating menu from @buoy-gg/core.

Debug Borders demo

Install

npm install @buoy-gg/core @buoy-gg/debug-borders

Quick start

import { FloatingDevTools } from "@buoy-gg/core";

export default function App() {
  return (
    <>
      <YourApp />
      <FloatingDevTools />
    </>
  );
}

Tap the BORDERS icon in the floating menu to cycle Off → Borders → Labels.

Want your own naming or colors? Build the tool with createDebugBordersTool({ name: "LAYOUT", bordersColor: "#ec4899", ... }) and pass it to FloatingDevTools via the apps array.

What you get

  • Depth-colored borders — rainbow borders on every component, colored by depth in the tree, fully touch-through so they never block interaction.
  • Labels mode — filters down to components with a testID or accessibilityLabel: green = testID, pink = accessibilityLabel. Labels sit above their boxes and stack automatically when they overlap.
  • Tap to inspect — tap any label for the component's testID, accessibilityLabel, nativeID, key, accessibility props, full computed styles, and exact position and size.
  • Answers real questions on-device — "what testID does QA need for this button?" or "which component owns this padding?" without leaving the phone.
  • Stays out of the way — borders auto-hide on inactive screens in stack navigators and whenever a DevTools modal is open, and they track layout changes automatically.
  • Works everywhere — Expo and React Native CLI, Fabric (New Architecture) and Paper.

Desktop & AI

The same live session streams to Buoy Desktop (free, macOS/Windows/Linux) and to Claude Code or Cursor via the Buoy MCP server.

Free vs Pro

Every tool is free. Pro unlocks production builds, the MCP server, and unlimited capture. Every weekend, Pro features unlock free for everyone.
