Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

CodeWalker MCP server for GTA V RPF, map, model, texture and project workflows.

Readme

CodeWalker MCP

An MCP server for working with Grand Theft Auto V assets through the CodeWalker file formats and RPF archive model. It is intended for MCP clients such as Codex and Claude Code.

Requirements

  • Windows
  • .NET 8 Runtime
  • Node.js 18 or later
  • A local CodeWalker installation when opening CodeWalker applications is needed

The server can inspect standalone RPF archives without a GTA V installation. For game indexing and safe mod operations, provide the GTA V directory explicitly.

Configure an MCP client

Add the following server definition to the MCP configuration for your client. Replace the example paths with paths on your machine.

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "codewalker": {
      "command": "npx",
      "args": [
        "-y",
        "@carlos1402/codewalker-mcp",
        "--workspace",
        "C:\\GTA-Modding\\workspace",
        "--codewalker-dir",
        "C:\\Tools\\CodeWalker"
      ]
    }
  }
}

--workspace is a writable directory used for exports, staging and backups. It defaults to the current directory. --codewalker-dir is optional and enables the tools that launch CodeWalker, RPF Explorer, Project Window, Vehicle Viewer and Ped Viewer.

Alternatively, set CODEWALKER_DIR and CODEWALKER_MCP_WORKSPACE environment variables.

Capabilities

  • Scan GTA V or standalone RPF archives and search their files and directories.
  • Export raw files and CodeWalker XML; recursively export RPF directories.
  • Inspect YMAP, YTYP, YCD, YTD, YDR, YDD, YFT, YBN, AWC, YND and YNV resources.
  • Export DDS textures and decoded WAV streams from supported source assets.
  • Create and inspect native .cwproj projects.
  • Generate and resolve GTA V Jenk/meta hashes.
  • Create, transform, organise and validate YMAP entities and LOD relationships.
  • Prepare RPF imports, directory imports, XML conversion, texture changes and archive operations.

Write operations are deliberately two-phase: a prepare call describes the change and returns a confirmation token; only an explicit matching apply call writes to mods and first creates a backup of an existing mod archive. Original GTA V archives are never modified by this server.

Command line

The package normally runs under an MCP client. It can also be started directly:

npx -y @carlos1402/codewalker-mcp --workspace C:\GTA-Modding\workspace

The server communicates by JSON-RPC over standard input/output.

Development and publishing

This repository contains the server source and packaging scripts. From the npm/codewalker-mcp directory:

npm run prepare-server
npm run pack:check
npm publish --access public

Use a new semantic version for every npm publication. If the publishing account uses two-factor authentication, npm may request a current authenticator code or a granular token with permission to bypass 2FA.

Notes

CodeWalker is a separate project. This package does not include GTA V game data or grant access to proprietary game files. Use it only with content you are authorised to inspect or modify.
