Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

High-quality JPEG (MozJPEG) decode/encode for webcvt — lazy-loads @jsquash/jpeg wasm, plugs into the image adapter pipeline

Readme

@catlabtech/webcvt-image-jsquash-mozjpeg

High-quality JPEG decode/encode adapter for webcvt, wrapping @jsquash/jpeg (MozJPEG compiled to WebAssembly) with lazy wasm loading, typed errors, and opt-in registration.

MozJPEG produces noticeably smaller JPEGs than the browser's built-in encoder (trellis quantisation, progressive coding), making this the backend to choose when output size matters.

Overlaps @catlabtech/webcvt-image-canvas. Both handle image/jpeg. Register only one per registry — use this one when you want MozJPEG's better compression, or image-canvas when you want the zero-dependency, hardware-accelerated path.

Installation

npm install @catlabtech/webcvt-image-jsquash-mozjpeg
# plus the wasm codec (optional peer):
npm install @jsquash/jpeg

Usage

import { registerMozjpegBackend } from '@catlabtech/webcvt-image-jsquash-mozjpeg';

// Opt-in registration — no wasm loads until the first convert().
registerMozjpegBackend(undefined, { encode: { quality: 80, progressive: true } });

Lower-level free functions are also exported:

import { decodeMozjpeg, encodeMozjpeg } from '@catlabtech/webcvt-image-jsquash-mozjpeg';

const imageData = await decodeMozjpeg(jpegBytes);
const smaller = await encodeMozjpeg(imageData, { quality: 80, progressive: true });

canHandle matrix

| Input | Output | Supported | Notes | |-------|--------|-----------|-------| | JPEG | JPEG | yes | Recompress (often smaller than the source) | | JPEG | PNG / WebP | yes* | MozJPEG decode + canvas bridge | | PNG / WebP | JPEG | yes* | canvas bridge + MozJPEG encode |

* Cross-format paths need OffscreenCanvas (browsers/workers). JPEG→JPEG works anywhere.

Encode options

interface MozjpegEncodeOptions {
  quality?: number;       // 0–100 (higher = better), default 75
  progressive?: boolean;  // default false
  baseline?: boolean; // default false (force non-optimised baseline)
}

Security limits

| Limit | Value | Error | |---|---|---| | Max input bytes | 256 MiB | MozjpegInputTooLargeError | | Max pixel count | 25 MP | MozjpegDimensionsTooLargeError |

CSP requirements

The @jsquash/jpeg wasm binary requires script-src 'wasm-unsafe-eval'.

Error types

| Class | Code | |---|---| | MozjpegLoadError | MOZJPEG_LOAD_FAILED | | MozjpegDecodeError | MOZJPEG_DECODE_FAILED | | MozjpegEncodeError | MOZJPEG_ENCODE_FAILED | | MozjpegInputTooLargeError | MOZJPEG_INPUT_TOO_LARGE | | MozjpegDimensionsTooLargeError | MOZJPEG_DIMENSIONS_TOO_LARGE |

All extend WebcvtError from @catlabtech/webcvt-core.
