Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

astro-selfie test

Astro integration to generate page screenshots to show as Open Graph images.

Maintained fork of astro-selfie, originally created by Vadim Demedes. Thanks to Vadim for the original work.

Link previews generated with this integration look like this:

Inspired by Simon Willison's website.

Requirements

  • Astro 7 (astro@^7.0.0)
  • Node.js 22 or later
  • A platform that can run headless Chromium (via Playwright) during astro build
  • Static output; screenshots are taken of the built pages

Install

npx astro add @celestio/astro-selfie

Or install it manually:

npm install --save-dev @celestio/astro-selfie

Chromium is downloaded by the @playwright/browser-chromium install script. pnpm 10+ skips dependency install scripts by default, so approve it with pnpm approve-builds, or install the browser directly:

npx playwright install chromium

Usage

1. Set up integration

Add the integration to astro.config.mjs (astro add does this for you). Set site, since screenshot URLs are absolute:

import {defineConfig} from 'astro/config';
+ import selfie from '@celestio/astro-selfie';

export default defineConfig({
+    site: 'https://example.com',
+    integrations: [selfie()],
});

2. Add meta tags

Then, add a <meta> tag to each page that points to a screenshot of itself.

---
import {selfieUrl} from '@celestio/astro-selfie:utils';

const screenshotUrl = selfieUrl(Astro);
---

<meta property="og:image" content={screenshotUrl.href} />

3. Customize styles (optional)

Selfie adds a data-astro-selfie attribute to body when taking a screenshot. You can use that data attribute to change any styles in CSS to make sure page looks good.

For example:

body[data-astro-selfie] .container {
  padding: 32px 64px;
}

4. Generate screenshots

Screenshots are taken at the end of astro build and written to og/ inside the build output (dist/og by default), so they are deployed with the site.

npx astro build

The integration must therefore run in the build you deploy. Each page waits 3 seconds before its screenshot, so builds of large sites take longer.
