Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

Monitor GitHub repositories from your terminal. Get macOS desktop notifications when there are new commits, pull requests, issues, releases, and more.

Install

npm install -g gitnotify

Usage

# Add repos to your watch list
gitnotify add facebook/react
gitnotify add vercel/next.js

# See what you're watching
gitnotify list

# Start monitoring (checks every 5 minutes by default)
gitnotify watch

# Check more frequently (minimum 30s)
gitnotify watch --interval 60

# Test notifications for a repo
gitnotify test facebook/react

# Check last activity timestamps
gitnotify status

# Stop watching a repo
gitnotify remove facebook/react

  • Desktop notifications - macOS notifications via native Notification Center
  • Multiple repos - Watch as many repos as you want
  • Smart dedup - Only notifies for new events since last check
  • Event types - Commits, PRs, issues, releases, forks, stars, comments
  • Rate limit aware - Respects GitHub API limits (60 req/hr unauthenticated)
  • Persistent state - Remembers what you've seen across sessions (~/.gitnotify.json)
