Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Qi Workspace observation, isolation, process, and effect settlement adapters

Readme

@civaapple/qi-workspace

Isolated world adapters, freshness observations, process boundaries, and durable effect settlement.

Purpose

Workspace adapters define the concrete slice of the world an Agent can observe or change. The Effect Journal protects non-read operations from duplicate execution when retries or crashes make settlement uncertain.

Non-goals

  • Workspace isolation does not grant authority; capability checks remain separate.
  • It does not decide which tool or task should run.
  • It does not treat host access or Docker availability as implicit success.

Core model

LocalWorkspace uses lexical root containment and freshness observations. ContainerWorkspaceAdapter runs a configured Workspace mount with network disabled and both container root and Workspace read-only by default. GitWorktreeAdapter isolates repository changes. SqliteEffectJournal reserves, starts, and settles effects by stable intent and idempotency keys.

Behavioral invariants

  • LocalWorkspace rejects lexical traversal outside the configured root. Symlink rejection is enforced by the higher-level file tools; this adapter alone is not a symbolic-link security boundary.
  • Writes based on stale observations are rejected.
  • Non-read effects are serialized through a durable journal.
  • Completed effects replay their settlement; indeterminate effects block automatic re-entry.
  • Host process helpers scrub credential-like environment names by default and can terminate process trees on timeout or cancel.

Failure semantics

Unavailable isolation fails honestly. Executor uncertainty becomes indeterminate, not ordinary failure. Callers need explicit reconciliation before retrying an unknown effect.

Install and minimal use

npm install @civaapple/qi-workspace
import { LocalWorkspace } from "@civaapple/qi-workspace";

const workspace = new LocalWorkspace(process.cwd());
const observation = await workspace.observe("README.md");

Public API

LocalWorkspace, ContainerWorkspaceAdapter, GitWorktreeAdapter, host-process helpers (scrubCredentialEnvironment, runHostProcess, terminateProcessTree), EffectJournal, and SqliteEffectJournal.

Change guide

Keep authority, isolation, and effect settlement independent. New adapters must document trust assumptions and prove path, process, crash, and cleanup behavior.

Verification

tests/workspace-safety.test.mjs is the primary evidence; built-in integration is covered by tests/tools-capability.test.mjs.
