Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

@clessira/sdk

v0.1.0

Published

Client SDK for the Clessira macOS app loopback HTTP API.

Readme

@nowdoing/sdk (JavaScript / TypeScript)

Client SDK for the NowDoing macOS app's loopback HTTP API. Use it from editor plugins, CLIs, build hooks, or any Node / Bun / Deno tool that wants to read the currently-tracked activity or push events (branch switches, search, start) into the app.

The Mac app exposes a tiny HTTP listener on 127.0.0.1:39847 (configurable), secured with a per-install shared secret plus HMAC-SHA256 request signing and replay protection. This SDK handles all of that for you.

Install

npm install @nowdoing/sdk
# or
pnpm add @nowdoing/sdk
# or
bun add @nowdoing/sdk

Node ≥ 20 (uses built-in fetch and node:crypto; Node 18 went EOL in April 2025). Browser is intentionally unsupported — the listener binds to loopback and most browsers refuse CORS to 127.0.0.1.

Enable the HTTP API

Open NowDoing → Einstellungen → Integrationen → HTTP-API and turn on Aktiviert. By default the listener stays off — the VSCode extension uses a separate Unix Domain Socket and doesn't need the TCP listener. Once enabled, NowDoing binds an HTTP server on 127.0.0.1 (default port 39847) using the same token as the VSCode integration. Pass token and port to the constructor or set:

export NOWDOING_TOKEN="…"
export NOWDOING_PORT=39847   # optional, default

Quickstart

import { NowDoingClient } from "@nowdoing/sdk";

const client = new NowDoingClient();

await client.healthcheck();

const current = await client.getCurrent();
if (current === null) {
  console.log("Nothing running.");
} else {
  console.log(`On: ${current.activityName} (since ${current.startedAt})`);
}

const hits = await client.searchActivities("co", { limit: 5 });
for (const hit of hits) {
  console.log(`  ${hit.name}  [${hit.groupName ?? "no group"}]`);
}

const started = await client.startActivity({
  name: "Refactor",
  createIfMissing: true,
});
console.log(`Started ${started.activityName} (created=${started.created})`);

await client.notifyBranchChange({
  branch: "feature/sdk-rewrite",
  repo: "nowdoingmac",
  previousBranch: "main",
});

Errors

All exceptions inherit from NowDoingError. HTTP failures map to:

| Status | Class | Typical cause | | -----: | --------------------------- | -------------------------------------- | | 400 | NowDoingValidationError | Bad payload (e.g. empty branch). | | 401 | NowDoingAuthError | Wrong/missing token or bad signature. | | 404 | NowDoingNotFoundError | Activity UUID unknown. | | 409 | NowDoingReplayError | Nonce already used in last 180 s. | | 503 | NowDoingUnavailableError | Endpoint handler not wired in the app. | | other | NowDoingHttpError | Anything else (incl. 5xx). |

Each carries status: number and serverMessage: string.

API

| Method | Endpoint | | ----------------------------------------------------------------- | ------------------------- | | healthcheck() | GET /healthcheck | | getCurrent(): Promise<CurrentActivity \| null> | GET /current | | searchActivities(q, { limit? }): Promise<ActivitySearchItem[]> | GET /activities/search | | startActivity({ activityID?, name?, createIfMissing? }) | POST /activities/start | | notifyBranchChange({ branch, repo?, previousBranch? }) | POST /branch-changed |

Running the tests

npm install
npm test

The unit tests boot a tiny in-process Node HTTP server that re-implements the Mac app's signature + replay checks, so they exercise the real over-the-wire contract — not mocked transport.
