Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

particle-cloud

A lightweight, dependency-free and responsive javascript plugin for particle backgrounds.

GitHub license

This is a fork of particles.js. Compared to the archived original project, this library has several improvements:

  • Bug fixes
  • Performance improvements, i.e. for the drawing stage
  • Complete port to Typescript
  • Works with React server-side rendering, and therefore also Gatsby, out of the box

Installation

npm install --save @codegewerk/particle-cloud

Alternatively, the minified package can be used directly via a CDN.

<script src="https://unpkg.com/@codegewerk/[email protected]/dist/particles.min.js"></script>

Minimal Example

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html>
  <head>
    <meta charset="utf-8" />
    <style>
      html,
      body {
        margin: 0;
        padding: 0;
        height: 100%;
      }

      .background {
        position: absolute;
        display: block;
        top: 0;
        left: 0;
        z-index: 0;
        height: 100%;
      }
    </style>
  </head>
  <body>
    <canvas class="background"></canvas>
    <script src="https://unpkg.com/@codegewerk/[email protected]/dist/particles.min.js"></script>
    <script>
      const instance = new ParticleCloud({
        connectParticles: true,
        selector: ".background",
      });
      instance.start();
    </script>
  </body>
</html>

Usage with npm

You need to import the ParticleCloud class before using the library.

import ParticleCloud from "@codegewerk/particle-cloud";

const instance = new ParticleCloud({
  connectParticles: true,
  selector: ".background",
});

instance.start();

Usage with React

import React, { useEffect } from "react";
import ParticleCloud from "@codegewerk/particle-cloud";

export default function ParticleCloudCanvas() {
  useEffect(() => {
    const instance = new ParticleCloud({
      speed: 0.2,
      maxParticles: 100,
      selector: ".particles",
      color: ["#f58220", "#d28645", "#dddddd"],
      connectParticles: true,
    });

    instance.start();

    return () => instance.destroy();
  }, []);

  return <canvas className="particles"></canvas>;
}

Options

| Key | Type | Default | Description | | ------------------ | ------------------ | --------- | --------------------------------------------------------------------- | | selector | string | - | Required: The CSS selector of your canvas element | | maxParticles | number | 100 | Optional: Amount of particles | | sizeVariations | number | 3 | Optional: Maximum size of each particle | | speed | number | 0.5 | Optional: Movement speed of each particle | | color | string or string[] | #000000 | Optional: Color(s) of the particles and connecting lines | | minDistance | number | 120 | Optional: Distance in px for connecting lines | | connectParticles | boolean | false | Optional: true/false if connecting lines should be drawn or not | | responsive | BreakpointEntry[] | [] | Optional: Array of objects containing breakpoints and options |

BreakpointEntry

When any breakpoint options are specified, the library tries to find the smallest breakpoint with is still larger than the current screen size. If there is not such breakpoint, the library will fall back to the general settings. If there is a suitable breakpoint, the relevant options from the general settings are overwritten with the breakpoint specific options.

| Key | Type | Default | Description | | ------------ | ----------------- | ------- | ---------------------------------- | | breakpoint | number | - | Required: The breakpoint value | | options | BreakpointOptions | - | Required: The breakpoint options |

Each BreakpointOptions has the following fields:
