Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

@codeskop/tracker-react

React error tracking and analytics in three lines: a provider, an error boundary and a hook.

npm version license

The React adapter for @codeskop/tracker. Codeskop groups every render error, uncaught error and failing API call into issues with stack traces, the browser and the release, so you can fix what your users actually hit. Works with Next.js App Router (ships "use client"), Vite and Create React App. React 18 and 19.

Get started in 2 minutes

1. Create a free account at dashboard.codeskop.com/signup. No credit card. Copy your project's public key (cs_live_pk_…).

2. Install both packages:

npm install @codeskop/tracker @codeskop/tracker-react

3. Wrap your app:

import { CodeskopProvider, CodeskopErrorBoundary } from "@codeskop/tracker-react";

createRoot(document.getElementById("root")!).render(
  <CodeskopProvider config={{ apiKey: "cs_live_pk_…", release: "1.0.0" }}>
    <CodeskopErrorBoundary fallback={<p>Something went wrong.</p>}>
      <App />
    </CodeskopErrorBoundary>
  </CodeskopProvider>,
);

Render errors caught by the boundary, uncaught errors and unhandled rejections now show up in your dashboard.

Next.js App Router

// app/providers.tsx
"use client";
import { CodeskopProvider } from "@codeskop/tracker-react";

export function Providers({ children }: { children: React.ReactNode }) {
  return (
    <CodeskopProvider config={{ apiKey: process.env.NEXT_PUBLIC_CODESKOP_KEY! }}>
      {children}
    </CodeskopProvider>
  );
}

Then wrap {children} with <Providers> in app/layout.tsx.

The hook

useCodeskop() gives you identify, reset, recordException, track, screen, setEnabled and flush. Every call is a safe no-op, even without a provider above it. track takes an optional third argument, { category } (lifecycle, navigation, interaction, identity or conversion).

Every option of @codeskop/tracker's init works in the provider's config, including autocapture: { clicks: false } to turn off click capture.

import { useCodeskop } from "@codeskop/tracker-react";

function Checkout({ user }) {
  const { identify, recordException, track } = useCodeskop();
  useEffect(() => identify(user.id), [user.id]); // your own ID, never an email

  async function pay() {
    try {
      await submitPayment();
      track("order_completed", { value: 49.99 });
    } catch (error) {
      recordException(error);
      track("payment_failed", { reason: "declined" }, { category: "conversion" });
    }
  }
  // ...
}
