Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

@compiledbox/ts-config-manager

v1.0.2

Published

A type-safe environment configuration manager for TypeScript projects.

Readme

ts-config-manager

ts-config-manager is a lightweight, open source TypeScript library designed to simplify managing, validating, and transforming application configuration values. It provides a unified, type-safe configuration object by merging values from multiple sources—environment variables (including those loaded from a .env file) and optional configuration files (e.g., config.json).

Table of Contents

Overview

Managing application configuration—especially when merging multiple sources like environment variables and configuration files—can be error-prone and cumbersome. ts-config-manager addresses these challenges by:

  • Loading configuration values from various sources.
  • Validating and transforming these values using a predefined schema powered by Zod.
  • Providing a fully type-safe configuration object at runtime.
  • Supporting nested configurations, default values, and secure handling of sensitive information.

Features

  • Multi-Source Loading:
    Merge configuration values from environment variables, .env files, and JSON configuration files (config.json).

  • Schema Validation & Transformation:
    Use Zod to define schemas that validate and transform incoming configuration values.

  • Type Safety:
    Receive a fully typed configuration object at runtime, reducing runtime errors due to misconfigured settings.

  • Nested Configurations:
    Support for nested configuration objects with their own validation and default values.

  • Secret Handling:
    Easily mask sensitive data in your configuration for secure logging or debugging.

Installation

Install the library along with its required dependencies using npm:

npm install @compiledbox/ts-config-manager

Usage

Defining a Configuration Schema Define your configuration schema using Zod. For example:

import { z } from "zod";

const configSchema = z.object({
  PORT: z.preprocess(
    (val) => (typeof val === "string" && val.trim() !== "" ? val : "3000"),
    z.string()
  ).transform((val) => Number(val)),
  DB_HOST: z.string(),
  DB_PORT: z.preprocess(
    (val) => (typeof val === "string" && val.trim() !== "" ? val : "5432"),
    z.string()
  ).transform((val) => Number(val)),
  NESTED: z.object({
    FEATURE_FLAG: z.preprocess(
      (val) => (typeof val === "string" && val.trim() !== "" ? val : "false"),
      z.string()
    ).transform((val) => val === "true")
  }).optional()
});

Loading Configuration

Use the loadConfig function to load and validate your configuration:

import { loadConfig } from "@compiledbox/ts-config-manager";

// Load configuration from environment variables (.env file loaded automatically)
// or merge with a config.json file if specified.
const config = loadConfig(configSchema, { configFilePath: "./config.json" });

console.log("Loaded configuration:", config);

Usage Examples

Example 1: Environment Variables Only

import { z } from "zod";
import { loadConfig } from "@compiledbox/ts-config-manager";

const configSchema = z.object({
  PORT: z.preprocess(
    (val) => (typeof val === "string" && val.trim() !== "" ? val : "3000"),
    z.string()
  ).transform((val) => Number(val)),
  DB_HOST: z.string(),
  DB_PORT: z.preprocess(
    (val) => (typeof val === "string" && val.trim() !== "" ? val : "5432"),
    z.string()
  ).transform((val) => Number(val))
});

const config = loadConfig(configSchema);
console.log("Loaded configuration (env only):", config);

Example 2: Environment Variables and config.json

import { z } from "zod";
import { loadConfig } from "@compiledbox/ts-config-manager";

const configSchema = z.object({
  PORT: z.preprocess(
    (val) => (typeof val === "string" && val.trim() !== "" ? val : "3000"),
    z.string()
  ).transform((val) => Number(val)),
  DB_HOST: z.string(),
  DB_PORT: z.preprocess(
    (val) => (typeof val === "string" && val.trim() !== "" ? val : "5432"),
    z.string()
  ).transform((val) => Number(val))
});

const config = loadConfig(configSchema, { configFilePath: "./config.json" });
console.log("Loaded configuration (env and config.json):", config);
