Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Headless Search with React

Scaffold template: headless-search-react This sample serves as the scaffold template for creating new Coveo Headless search projects with React.

A minimal search interface built with @coveo/headless controllers and React. It queries the public searchuisamples organization through the BarcaKnowledge search hub.

What it shows

  • Building a SearchEngine and a focused set of controllers (search box, facets, sort, results, pager, query summary).
  • A single useController hook that bridges any Headless controller to React state.
  • Small, self-contained components — one per controller — that you can copy into your own app.

Technology stack

  • React + TypeScript
  • @coveo/headless — Coveo's headless search library
  • Vite — dev server and build
  • Vitest + Playwright — unit and end-to-end tests

Getting started

npm install
npm run dev # start the dev server (http://localhost:5173)
npm run build # production build
npm test # unit tests (Vitest)
npm run e2e      # end-to-end tests (Playwright)

How it works

src/engine.ts builds the engine and sets the BarcaKnowledge search hub. src/App.tsx instantiates the controllers and lays out the page (search box on top, facets on the left, results and pager on the right).

Every component subscribes to its controller through src/use-controller.ts:

export function useController<TController extends Controller>(
  controller: TController
): TController['state'] {
  const [state, setState] = useState(controller.state);
  useEffect(() => controller.subscribe(() => setState(controller.state)), [controller]);
  return state;
}

Using this sample as an MRE

This sample doubles as a minimal reproducible example for troubleshooting.

  • Where to change the configuration: everything lives in src/engine.ts. It uses getSampleSearchEngineConfiguration() (public sample credentials) with the BarcaKnowledge search hub. To reproduce your own issue, replace that configuration with your organizationId, accessToken, and search.searchHub/pipeline.
  • Safe to modify: src/engine.ts (configuration), and any component under src/components to reproduce a specific UI scenario.
  • Scaffolding you can usually ignore: vite.config.js, playwright.config.ts, tests/, and src/setupTests.ts.
  • Credentials: the sample configuration targets the public searchuisamples organization, safe to share with customers or partners. It is not internal credentials.

Reproducing against a specific version

To reproduce an issue against a specific Coveo UI Kit version, install it after scaffolding:

npm install @coveo/headless@<version>
