Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

@crossaudio/mod

This is a mod-player, based on webaudio modplayer that works in browsers (with a more modern interface), by itself, or on native nodejs.

usage

Basically, you can support whatever mod-types you want to. Other options: PlayerProtracker (mod) & PlayerScreamtracker (s3m). I only load 1, since I know I don't need the others, but you can also load all 3. You need fetch and AudioContext to be available (they are in browsers, but not node.) Use cross-fetch and @crossaudio/core to polyfill these for node, if you need that.

Here is a complete example using node:

// used in node to get data
import { readFile } from 'fs/promises'

// used in node to create AudioContext
import getContext from '@crossaudio/core'

import { Modplayer, PlayerFasttracker } from 'modernmod'

// setup the players you want to support
const modplayer = new Modplayer({ xm: PlayerFasttracker })

// polyfill AudioContext and pipe it to output
modplayer.createContext(await getContext())

// load a file from bytes
modplayer.autoplay = true
await modplayer.load(await readFile('music/mysong.xm'), 'xm')

Here is a complete example, in a browser, using loadUrl:

<script type="module">
import { Modplayer, PlayerFasttracker } from 'https://unpkg.com/@crossaudio/[email protected]/dist/crossaudio-mod.module.js'

const modplayer = new Modplayer({ xm: PlayerFasttracker })

// this must happen in a click handler on web
modplayer.createContext()

modplayer.autoplay = true
modplayer.loadUrl('music/tunes.xm')
</script>

installation

There are quite a few ways to install it.

npm

You can install it in your project, like this, if you use npm:

npm i @crossaudio/mod

Now, you can use it like this:

import { Modplayer, PlayerFasttracker } from '@crossaudio/mod'

or this:

const { Modplayer, PlayerFasttracker } = require('@crossaudio/mod')

With old-school script tags:

<script src="https://unpkg.com/@crossaudio/mod"></script>

Now, you have Modplayer, PlayerFasttracker, PlayerProtracker, PlayerScreamtracker in your global context (window.)

browser es6 module

<script type="importmap">
{
  "imports": {
    "@crossaudio/mod": "https://unpkg.com/@crossaudio/[email protected]/dist/crossaudio-mod.module.js"
  }
}
</script>
<script type="module">
import { Modplayer, PlayerFasttracker } from '@crossaudio/mod'
</script>
