Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

ISS Location Tracker MCP Server

Provides the current geographic location (latitude and longitude) of the International Space Station (ISS) in real time as an MCP server and Claude Desktop tool.

Features

Installation

Using npm (installs globally for use as CLI):

npm install -g @dennisk2025/iss-location-tracker

Using npx (runs immediately, no install needed):

npx @dennisk2025/iss-location-tracker

Adding to Claude Desktop

Add the following configuration to your Claude Desktop config file:

  • On macOS: ~/Library/Application Support/Claude/claude_desktop_config.json

This will make the ISS location tool available in Claude Desktop.

Usage

Once configured, you can use this MCP server either via the CLI or as a Claude Desktop tool.

CLI

iss-location-tracker

(This will run the MCP server on stdio)

Claude Desktop

  • After Claude restarts, the iss-location tool will be available as a function/tool call.

Available Tools

1. get_current_iss_location

Fetches the current latitude and longitude of the International Space Station (ISS).

Parameters:

  • None

Output Description

  • latitude: Current latitude of ISS (float)
  • longitude: Current longitude of ISS (float)
  • timestamp: UTC UNIX timestamp (int)

Error Handling

  • If the external API fails, returns a clear error message.
  • All exceptions and non-200 responses are handled gracefully.
