Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

@dev-lines/core

v0.2.0

Published

Framework-agnostic layout debug overlay: center/width/padding guides + depth-colored section outlines, labels, and distances. Zero dependencies.

Readme

@dev-lines/core

A framework-agnostic layout debug overlay. Draws guides, depth-colored section outlines, labels, and spacing distances on top of any page — without mutating your DOM. The whole overlay lives in one fixed, pointer-events: none layer, so your app is never touched and teardown is total.

See the lines. Before you ship the bug. → lines.wiki

  • 🎯 Viewport center cross + optional content-width and padding guides
  • 🌈 Depth-colored outlines around every flex/grid container (up to 12 depths)
  • 🏷️ Labels: name · tag · size · layout, per-box or all-at-once
  • 📏 Hold Alt for spacing distances from a box to its container
  • 🧊 Box-model bands: padding + flex/grid gaps on the hovered box (B)
  • 🔍 Inspect: I locks a box, arrow keys walk the tree
  • 📋 Press C to copy a box's handle (name · selector · tag · size · display · padding · gap) for handing to an AI agent
  • 🎛️ Optional on-page toolbar pill (toolbar: true)
  • ⚡ Zero dependencies. React optional.

Install

npm i -D @dev-lines/core

Usage (vanilla)

import { createDevLines } from "@dev-lines/core";

const dl = createDevLines({ contentWidth: 1280, paddingX: 24 });
dl.enable();

Toggle anytime with ⌘/Ctrl + Shift + L. Once enabled:

| Key | Action | |-----|--------| | O | toggle outlines | | G | toggle guides | | L | cycle labels (off → hover → all) | | I | lock inspect on a box — arrows walk the tree (↑ parent, ↓ child, ←/→ siblings) | | B | toggle box-model bands (padding + gap) | | C | copy the locked/hovered box's handle | | Alt (hold) | show spacing distances | | Esc | unlock inspect · disable |

Usage (React)

import { DevLines } from "@dev-lines/core/react";

export default function App() {
  return (
    <>
      {process.env.NODE_ENV === "development" && <DevLines contentWidth={1280} paddingX={24} />}
      {/* your app */}
    </>
  );
}

The overlay mounts for the lifetime of the component and tears down completely on unmount.

Controller API

createDevLines(options) returns:

interface DevLinesController {
  enable(): void;
  disable(): void;
  toggle(): void;
  isEnabled(): boolean;
  cycleLabels(mode?: "off" | "hover" | "all"): void;
  toggleOutlines(on?: boolean): void;
  toggleGuides(on?: boolean): void;
  toggleBoxModel(on?: boolean): void;
  inspect(el?: Element | null): void; // lock inspect (null unlocks, no arg toggles on hover)
  update(options): void;   // live-update colors / widths / labels and redraw
  copy(): void; // copy the locked/hovered box's handle
  getState(): { enabled, outlines, guides, labels, boxModel, inspected };
  refresh(): void;
  destroy(): void;

Naming boxes

Give any element an explicit label with data-devlines-name="Hero", or force an outline on a non-flex/grid element with data-devlines="outline". Mark elements to skip with data-devlines="ignore".
