Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

v0.1.0

Published

Check APIs against their OpenAPI contract: validate real responses (live, HAR files or a fetch wrapper) and detect breaking changes between spec versions.

Readme

@devchecks/apicontractcheck

Keeps an API and its OpenAPI 3.0/3.1 contract in sync.

  • Validate real traffic: from HAR files (DevTools "Save all as HAR", Playwright recordHar), by probing GET endpoints, or live in the browser through a fetch wrapper.
  • Breaking-change diff between two spec versions, for code review or CI.

It has its own dependency-free validator for the OpenAPI schema dialects: 3.0 nullable and boolean exclusiveMinimum, 3.1 type arrays and const, readOnly/writeOnly by direction, discriminators, allOf/anyOf/oneOf, formats, and local $refs. Errors carry JSON pointers (/items/0/price must be >= 0).

CLI

npx @devchecks/apicontractcheck validate --spec openapi.yaml --har session.har --requests
npx @devchecks/apicontractcheck probe --spec openapi.yaml --base-url http://localhost:3000 -H "authorization: Bearer $TOKEN"
npx @devchecks/apicontractcheck diff main/openapi.yaml openapi.yaml --fail-on high

probe only sends GET requests, filling path and query parameters from example/default/enum values. It skips operations whose required parameters have no example.

| Finding | Severity | |---|---| | response-schema-violation | high | | undocumented-status (5xx high), undocumented-path, undocumented-method, undocumented-content-type | medium | | request-schema-violation, request-parameter-missing, request-body-missing (with --requests) | medium | | missing-response-header, undocumented-response-body | low |

Diff rules: endpoint-removed, required-parameter-added, request-body-required, required-property-added, property-removed, type-changed, enum-narrowed (requests) → high; enum-widened, property-optional, response-nullable (responses), constraint-tightened, response-removed → medium. Additions are reported as info. Renaming a path parameter is not treated as a breaking change.

Browser / CDN

<script src="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/gh/ravikiran476/[email protected]/cdn/apicontractcheck.min.js"></script>
<script>
  fetch('/openapi.json').then((r) => r.json()).then((spec) => {
    window.fetch = APIContractCheck.createValidatingFetch(spec, { onFinding: (f) => console.warn(f.message) });
  });
</script>

The wrapper never changes the response your app receives; it only reports. Also: validateExchange(spec, exchange), fromHar(har), diffSpecs(old, next), validateSchema(schema, value, ctx).

Swagger 2.0 must be converted first (e.g. with swagger2openapi). External $refs must be bundled into one file (e.g. with redocly bundle).
