Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Performance budgets: Core Web Vitals and resource weight in the browser, bundle size budgets (gzip/brotli) and Playwright lab runs in CI.

@devchecks/perfcheck

Performance budgets for pages and bundles.

  • In the browser (CDN): Core Web Vitals (LCP and its element, CLS with session windows, INP, FCP, TTFB, TBT) and resource weight by type, including third-party bytes. Use it in development, or for real-user monitoring with onPageHidden.
  • Bundles: raw, gzip and brotli sizes of build output, checked against per-file or total budgets.
  • Lab runs: Playwright/Chromium runs with optional CPU and network throttling. Each run starts with a cold cache, and the median of several runs is used.

Without explicit budgets, metrics are checked against Google's Core Web Vitals thresholds: "needs improvement" → medium, "poor" → high.

CLI

npx @devchecks/perfcheck bundles dist
npm i -D @devchecks/perfcheck playwright && npx playwright install chromium
npx perfcheck http://localhost:4173/ /products --runs 5 --cpu 4 --network slow-4g

perfcheck.config.json:

{
  "bundles": {
    "dir": "dist",
    "budgets": [
      { "path": "assets/index-*.js", "maxGzip": "170kB" },
      { "path": "total:js", "maxBrotli": "350kB" },
      { "path": "total:css", "maxGzip": "50kB" }
    ]
  },
  "baseUrl": "http://localhost:4173",
  "pages": ["/", "/products"],
  "budgets": { "lcp": 2500, "cls": 0.1, "tbt": 200, "scriptBytes": "400kB", "thirdPartyBytes": "150kB", "requests": 60 }
}

Sizes accept B, kB/MB (1000) and KiB/MiB (1024). Hashes in file names are ignored in fingerprints, so baselines survive rebuilds.

Browser / CDN

Load it early in <head> so it sees every layout shift and interaction:

<script src="https://cdn.jsdelivr.net/gh/ravikiran476/[email protected]/cdn/perfcheck.min.js"></script>
<script>
  PerfCheck.measure({ budgets: { lcp: 2500 } }).then((r) => console.table(r.vitals));
  PerfCheck.onPageHidden((vitals) => navigator.sendBeacon('/rum', JSON.stringify(vitals)));
</script>

INP needs real interactions, so lab runs report TBT as the responsiveness proxy. Lab numbers vary between machines; use several runs and field data for decisions.
