Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

@document0/mdx

v0.7.0

Published

document0 MDX processor - MDX compilation, frontmatter, remark/rehype plugins, and Shiki syntax highlighting

Readme

@document0/mdx

MDX processing for document0. Compiles .mdx and .md files with frontmatter extraction, GFM support, auto-generated heading IDs, table of contents, and Shiki syntax highlighting, all without any UI.

Install

npm install @document0/mdx
# or
pnpm add @document0/mdx
# or
yarn add @document0/mdx
# or
bun add @document0/mdx

Usage

Basic MDX processing

import { processMdx } from "@document0/mdx";

const { code, frontmatter, toc } = await processMdx(`
---
title: Getting Started
description: Learn how to get started
---

# Hello World

Some **markdown** content.
`);

console.log(frontmatter); // { title: "Getting Started", description: "..." }
console.log(toc); // [{ id: "hello-world", text: "Hello World", depth: 1 }]

The returned code is a compiled JS function body that can be executed with a JSX runtime. In a Next.js/React app:

import { run } from "@mdx-js/mdx";
import * as runtime from "react/jsx-runtime";

const { default: MDXContent } = await run(code, { ...runtime, baseUrl: import.meta.url });

// Render with custom components
<MDXContent components={{ h1: MyHeading, pre: MyCodeBlock }} />

With Shiki syntax highlighting

import { processMdx } from "@document0/mdx";
import { createHighlighter } from "shiki";

const highlighter = await createHighlighter({
  themes: ["github-dark", "github-light"],
  langs: ["typescript", "javascript", "bash", "json"],
});

const { code, frontmatter, toc } = await processMdx(source, {
  highlighter,
  defaultLanguage: "plaintext",
});

With custom remark/rehype plugins

import { processMdx } from "@document0/mdx";
import remarkMath from "remark-math";
import rehypeKatex from "rehype-katex";

const result = await processMdx(source, {
  remarkPlugins: [remarkMath],
  rehypePlugins: [rehypeKatex],
});

Plugins

Both plugins are also exported individually for use in your own unified pipeline:

import { rehypeShiki, remarkToc } from "@document0/mdx/plugins";

rehypeShiki

Transforms fenced code blocks into Shiki-highlighted HTML. Requires a pre-created Shiki highlighter instance. This keeps the highlighter lifecycle in your control.

remarkToc

Extracts headings into a table-of-contents array via an onToc callback. Does not inject any HTML.
