Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

@draco-rust/fbx

v0.3.0

Published

Binary FBX reading and writing in WebAssembly: meshes, the model tree, materials, skins and morphs.

Readme

@draco-rust/fbx

Reads and writes binary FBX in WebAssembly. It keeps the model tree with its local transforms, the materials, the skins with their weights, and the morph targets, rather than a flat list of meshes. It is part of draco-rust and is what the converter uses to bring FBX into glTF.

~234 KiB gzip.

Usage

import init, { read_fbx, write_fbx } from "@draco-rust/fbx";

await init();
const scene = read_fbx(fbxBytes);
if (!scene.success) throw new Error(scene.error);
console.log(scene.meshes.length, scene.warnings);

const written = write_fbx({ positions, indices, normals, uvs }, {}); // or an array of meshes
const fbx = written.bytes; // Uint8Array

write_fbx_scene(scene, options) writes a whole scene instead: model hierarchy, materials, textures, animation and local transforms. Compressed FBX arrays (zlib) are read, which every mainstream exporter writes. ASCII FBX is not supported.

On workers

A large file blocks the calling thread while it is read or written. @draco-rust/fbx/pool runs the same functions on workers:

import { createPool } from "@draco-rust/fbx/pool";

const pool = createPool({ workers: 2 }); // default: cores - 1, at most 4
const result = await pool.read(bytes); // what read_fbx returns
const written = await pool.write(meshes, {}); // what write_fbx returns
const scene = await pool.writeScene(sceneInput, {}); // what write_fbx_scene returns
pool.dispose();

The workers start as work arrives, and the wasm is compiled once for all of them. Inputs are copied to the worker, or handed over with { transfer: true }; { signal } takes an AbortSignal, which rejects the promise at once. A task a worker has started still runs to its end and its result is dropped. With workers: 0, or where there are no workers, the pool runs on the calling thread. It works on Web Workers, Node's worker threads (Node 20.16 and later) and from a CDN, as the decoder's does.

For loading from a CDN or in Node, see the decoder's README; the same init options apply, with @draco-rust/fbx/index_bg.wasm as the file.
