Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

@eddeee888/gcg-operation-location-migration

This GraphQL Code Generator preset is a tool to migrate various operation and codegen style to the recommended Client Preset approach.

For example:

  • From index-style to document node co-location
  • From near-operation-file to document node co-location

Installation

yarn add -D @eddeee888/gcg-operation-location-migration

Usage

This preset is a migration tool so you only need to run it once with codegen command. It may not catch all edge cases, so it is recommended to review the code changes to ensure nothing breaks.

The general workflow has a few main steps:

  1. Add the migration preset to your Codegen config
  2. Comment out other Codegen generates config
  3. Run codegen
  4. Remove old documents and generated files
  5. Add Client Preset config

Migration: from index-style to document node co-location

import type { CodegenConfig } from '@graphql-codegen/cli';
import { defineConfig } from '@eddeee888/gcg-operation-location-migration';

const config: CodegenConfig = {
  schema: 'src/**/*.graphqls',
  documents: 'src/**/*.graphql',
  generates: {
    /*
     * Example of index-style generation where all types and hooks go to one file.
     * Once migrated, you can remove this completely
     */
    // 'src/generated/types-and-hooks.ts': {
    //  plugins: ['typescript', 'typescript-operations', 'typescript-react-apollo'],
    // },

    'src/': defineConfig({
      tsConfigFilePath: 'path-to-your/tsconfig.json',
      gqlTag: {
        name: 'graphql',
        importFrom: './gql',
        importType: 'relative',
      },
      hooksImportFrom: '@apollo/client/react', // Use @apollo/client for v3
    }),
  },
};

export default config;

Migration: from near-operation-file to document node co-location

import type { CodegenConfig } from '@graphql-codegen/cli';
import { defineConfig } from '@eddeee888/gcg-operation-location-migration';

const config: CodegenConfig = {
  schema: 'src/**/*.graphqls',
  documents: 'src/**/*.graphql',
  generates: {
    /*
     * Example of near-operation-file generation where hooks are generated next to the operation file.
     * Once migrated, you can remove this completely
     */
    // 'src/graphql/types.generated.ts': {
    //   plugins: ['typescript'],
    // },
    // './src/': {
    //   preset: 'near-operation-file',
    //   presetConfig: {
    //     baseTypesPath: './graphql/types.generated.ts',
    //     extension: '.generated.ts',
    //   },
    //   plugins: ['typescript-operations', 'typescript-react-apollo'],
    // },

    'src/': defineConfig({
      tsConfigFilePath: 'path-to-your/tsconfig.json',
      gqlTag: {
        name: 'graphql',
        importFrom: './gql',
        importType: 'relative',
      },
      hooksImportFrom: '@apollo/client/react', // Use @apollo/client for v3
    }),
  },
};

export default config;

Migration: from near-operation-file to near-operation-file

import type { CodegenConfig } from '@graphql-codegen/cli';
import { defineConfig } from '@eddeee888/gcg-operation-location-migration';

const config: CodegenConfig = {
  schema: 'src/**/*.graphqls',
  documents: 'src/**/*.graphql',
  generates: {
    /*
     * Example of near-operation-file generation where hooks are generated next to the operation file.
     * Once migrated, you can remove this completely
     */
    // 'src/graphql/types.generated.ts': {
    //   plugins: ['typescript'],
    // },
    // './src/': {
    //   preset: 'near-operation-file',
    //   presetConfig: {
    //     baseTypesPath: './graphql/types.generated.ts',
    //     extension: '.generated.ts',
    //   },
    //   plugins: ['typescript-operations', 'typescript-react-apollo'],
    // },

    'src/': defineConfig({
      tsConfigFilePath: 'path-to-your/tsconfig.json',
      targetStyle: 'near-operation-file', // 👈 This is the main option to migrate to near-operation-file style
      gqlTag: {
        name: 'graphql',
        importFrom: './gql',
        importType: 'relative',
      },
      hooksImportFrom: '@apollo/client/react', // Use @apollo/client for v3
    }),
  },
};

export default config;

Switching to Client Preset

Once done, you can easily switch to Client Preset as everything should be in the right place:

import type { CodegenConfig } from '@graphql-codegen/cli';

const config: CodegenConfig = {
  schema: 'src/**/*.graphqls',
  documents: [ // 💡 Pick your documents depending on the migration target style.
    'src/**/*.tsx' // 👈 For co-location style: Your documents should be in your components, so this is updated to target them.
    'src/**/*.graphql.ts' // 👈 For near-operation-file style: Your documents are migrated to `.graphql.ts` next to your components
  ],
  generates: {
    'src/gql/': {
      preset: 'client',
    },
  },
};

export default config;
