Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Longboat

Longboat is Ekstra Bladets inhouse web analytics system.

Table Of Content

Getting Started

The NPM module only exposes types for use in typescript projects

Usage

For basic setup of longboat we recommend using the snippet below. This sets up a tracking queue, and allows pushing to said queue before longboat is ready to recieve and dispatch tracking events.

By default nothing is tracked.

<script>
window.longboat = window.longboat || {};
window.longboat.queue = window.longboat.queue || [];
</script>
<script async defer src="longboat.js"></script>

How to update and get the changes deployed

  • First of all make the changes needed to this repository.
  • Wait until a message is delivered in Slack #release
  • In eb-infra/deploy/public/longboat/helm change either the appVersion i Chart.yaml if the release should go to production otherwith change the tag property in the test- or production-values.yaml file.
  • Commit the changes and wait until ArgoCD deployes the changes (up to 5 minutes wait)

How to include

Including longboat requires a Varnish server with esi.[test-]ekstrabladet.services backend defined with a prefix mapping of /ext_component/ and ESI processing activated.

With those prerequisites in place the component is included with the following include directive:

<esi:include src="/ext_component/longboat/include.html"/>

Docker

Using the resulting docker image requires the environment variable

FULL_URL_TO_EB_CMP_JS

set to the URL where the longboat.js file should be served from.

The common scenario where the container is used as an external component on ekstrabladet.dk and related sites using the relative path /ext_component/cmp/longboar.js makes the JS file local to the site where the compoent is served as it will be proxied through the Varnish server.

Building the image locally can be done using

docker build -t longboat .

And running it

docker run -it --rm -p 8080:80 -e FULL_URL_TO_EB_CMP_JS=http://localhost:8080/longboat/longboat.js eb-longboat
