Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

cli-me

A tiny, just-for-fun CLI I hacked together. It currently ships one playful command: hello(). It asks your name and says hey in color. That's it. Simple vibes.

What is this?

  • A bin-only util (no library entry point)
  • ESM by default (see package.json)
  • One command to start: hello
  • Friendly to contributions — add more commands, refactors, docs, whatever

Quick start (local)

  • Link it locally:
    • npm install
    • npm link
  • Use it:
    • cli-me hello

You'll be prompted for your name and get a cheerful greeting from main().

Alternatively, without linking:

  • node ./index.js hello

Global install (already linked)

  • npm i -g @ellyb/cli-me
  • Run it anywhere:
    • cli-me hello

Commands

  • hello
    • Prompts for your name and prints a colored greeting via hello().

Why so minimal?

Because it's fun. Also because it's a clean starting point for you to play with commander + inquirer + chalk without wading through boilerplate.

Add your own commands

Totally encouraged. A quick pattern you can copy inside main():

program
  .command("your-cmd")
  .description("describe what it does")
  .option("-f, --flag", "optional flag")
  .action(async (opts) => {
    // do your thing
  });

Open a PR and ship your idea. Weird ideas welcome.

Tech bits

  • CLI entry: index.js
  • Bin mapping lives in package.json
  • ESM only:
    • type: "module"
    • Chalk v5 is ESM
  • Shebang is set to #!/usr/bin/env node at the top of index.js, so you naturally need to have node installed
  • Dependencies:
    • commander for CLI ergonomics
    • @inquirer/prompts for interactive prompts
    • chalk for colors

Dev tips

  • Linting/tests aren't set up — feel free to add them
  • Keep commands small and focused
  • If you add files, update docs so folks can discover your new goodies

Contributing

  • Fork, branch, commit, open PR
  • Keep the tone casual and helpful in messages and docs
  • If you break something, no sweat — we'll fix it
