Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

babel-env npm version npm downloads

A flexible Babel plugin that loads environment variables for multiple environments.

Installation

npm i @elselabs/babel-env

Add @elselabs/babel-env to the plugins list inside .babelrc or babel.config.js, depending on which config used by your project. (Babel configuration docs link)

// .babelrc
{
  "plugins": ["module:@elselabs/babel-env"]
}

// babel.config.js
module.exports = {
  plugins: ['module:@elselabs/babel-env'],
}

NOTE: Older versions of babel (< 7) do not require the module: prefix.

Usage

By default this package reads a .env file inside the project root folder.

API_KEY=ipsum

And allows you to import these variables in your JS.

import { API_KEY } from '@elselabs/babel-env';
console.log(API_KEY)

// or

import config from '@elselabs/babel-env';
console.log(config.API_KEY)

Handling different environments

By default this package reads the BABEL_ENV environment variable to determine which .env to read. Therefore, if you set export BABEL_ENV=production, it will look for a file named .env.production.

The environment variable, file format, file directory and import module name are all configurable.

Configuration

  • environmentVariable - By default uses the BABEL_ENV environment variable.

You may want to override the environment variable used to determine which environment your compiling. In some cases like react-native-cli, it uses BABEL_ENV and sets it to either development or production. As a result, its difficult to compile for another environments like staging, test, etc. Alternatively, you can create a custom environment variable and have it use that instead.

  • moduleName - By default the import name is @elselabs/babel-env.
  • directory - By default uses the root project folder.
  • fileFormat - By default uses .env.
// .babelrc example
{
  "plugins": [
      ["module:@elselabs/babel-env",
        {
          "environmentVariable": "",
          "moduleName": "",
          "directory": "",
          "fileFormat": ""
        }
    ]
  ]
}

// babel.config.js example
module.exports = {
  plugins: [
    [
      'module:@elselabs/babel-env',
      {environmentVariable: '', moduleName: '', fileFormat: '', directory: ''},
    ],
  ],
};
