Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

@equalseat/mcp-server

MCP server for connecting AI tools to your equalseat.ai knowledge base.

Works with Claude Code, Claude Desktop, and any MCP-compatible client.

What it does

equalseat.ai is an organisational brain that captures, structures, and retrieves your team's knowledge. This MCP server gives AI tools direct access to that brain.

Tools:

  • ask - Query your knowledge base. "What's our deployment process?" "What did we decide about pricing?"
  • ingest - Add knowledge. Decisions, meeting notes, processes, context - anything the brain should know.

Quick start

1. Get an API key

Go to your equalseat.ai team settings and generate an API key.

2. Configure Claude Code

Add to your project's .mcp.json:

{
  "mcpServers": {
    "equalseat": {
      "type": "stdio",
      "command": "npx",
      "args": ["-y", "@equalseat/mcp-server"],
      "env": {
        "EQUALSEAT_API_KEY": "sk_your_api_key_here"
      }
    }
  }
}

3. Use it

Claude will automatically discover the tools. You can:

  • Ask questions about your business knowledge
  • Save decisions and context from conversations
  • Reference your team's processes while planning

Configuration

| Variable | Required | Default | Description | |---|---|---|---| | EQUALSEAT_API_KEY | Yes | | API key from equalseat.ai settings | | EQUALSEAT_API_URL | No | https://equalseat.ai | API base URL (for self-hosted or local dev) |

Getting the most out of it

The MCP tools work out of the box, but you'll get much better results by telling your AI assistant when to use them. Add something like this to your project's CLAUDE.md:

## Knowledge Base

This project is connected to our equalseat.ai brain via MCP.

- **Before making architectural decisions**, ask equalseat what we've already decided
- **After meetings or discussions**, ingest key decisions and context
- **When unsure about process**, ask equalseat before guessing

Tailor this to your team — the more specific you are about when to query the brain, the more your assistant will use it at the right moments.

Examples

Once configured, your AI assistant can:

"Ask equalseat what our testing strategy is"
"Save this architecture decision to the brain: we're using Supabase for auth and database"
"What did we decide about the pricing model?"

Development

# Install
npm install

# Build
npm run build

# Run locally (for testing)
EQUALSEAT_API_KEY=sk_... node dist/cli.js
