Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

A virtual list component for Svelte 5

Readme

@erdemgoksel/svelte-virtual-list

A virtual list component for Svelte 5. Instead of rendering every item in a large array, VirtualList only renders the visible rows and pads the rest of the scroll area.

The current package is built as a Svelte 5 library and uses runes internally. The virtualization logic is unchanged from the original component, but the rendering API now uses Svelte 5 snippets.

Installation

pnpm add @erdemgoksel/svelte-virtual-list

You need Svelte 5 in the consuming app.

Usage

<script lang="ts">
  import { VirtualList } from '@erdemgoksel/svelte-virtual-list';

  let things = [
    { name: 'one', number: 1 },
    { name: 'two', number: 2 },
    { name: 'three', number: 3 }
  ];

  let start = $state(0);
  let end = $state(0);
</script>

<VirtualList items={things} bind:start bind:end>
  {#snippet row(item)}
    <p>{item.number}: {item.name}</p>
  {/snippet}
</VirtualList>

<p>showing {start}-{Math.max(start, end - 1)} of {things.length} rows</p>

Props

items

The array to virtualize.

height

Defaults to 100%. Pass any CSS length to control the viewport height.

<VirtualList items={things} height="500px">
  {#snippet row(item)}
    <p>{item.number}: {item.name}</p>
  {/snippet}
</VirtualList>

itemHeight

Optional fixed row height in pixels. If this is provided, initial measurement and scrolling can be more efficient because the component does not need to measure each rendered row.

<VirtualList items={things} itemHeight={48}>
  {#snippet row(item)}
    <p>{item.number}: {item.name}</p>
  {/snippet}
</VirtualList>

start and end

These values are bindable and reflect the currently rendered slice.

<script>
  let start = $state(0);
  let end = $state(0);
</script>

<VirtualList items={things} bind:start bind:end>
  {#snippet row(item)}
    <p>{item.name}</p>
  {/snippet}
</VirtualList>

start is the index of the first visible row. end is the exclusive upper bound of the rendered range.

Rendering rows

Rows are provided with a row snippet:

<VirtualList items={things}>
  {#snippet row(item)}
    <article>
      <h2>{item.name}</h2>
      <p>#{item.number}</p>
    </article>
  {/snippet}
</VirtualList>

If no row snippet is supplied, the component renders Missing template.

Package entry

The library exports a named component:

import { VirtualList } from '@erdemgoksel/svelte-virtual-list';

Demo

The repository includes a SvelteKit showcase page in src/routes/+page.svelte that demonstrates:

  • bindable start and end
  • dynamic item counts
  • fixed and measured row heights
  • a snippet-based row renderer
