Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Connectors for syncing external systems into EventCatalog.

GitHub

// eventcatalog.config.js
import { githubDirectory } from "@eventcatalog/connectors";

export default {
  directory: {
    sources: [
      githubDirectory({
        org: "acme",
        teams: ["platform", "architecture"],
        users: true,
        token: process.env.GITHUB_TOKEN,
      }),
    ],
  },
};

Microsoft Entra ID

Sync selected Microsoft Entra ID groups into EventCatalog teams, and sync their direct user members into EventCatalog users.

// eventcatalog.config.js
import { microsoftEntraDirectory } from "@eventcatalog/connectors";

export default {
  directory: {
    sources: [
      microsoftEntraDirectory({
        tenantId: process.env.AZURE_TENANT_ID,
        clientId: process.env.AZURE_CLIENT_ID,
        clientSecret: process.env.AZURE_CLIENT_SECRET,
        groups: [
          {
            id: "00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000",
            alias: "platform",
          },
          {
            displayName: "Architecture Guild",
          },
        ],
      }),
    ],
  },
};

The connector uses Microsoft Graph with the OAuth client credentials flow. Create an app registration in Microsoft Entra ID, add read-only Microsoft Graph application permissions for reading groups, users, and group members, grant admin consent, then create a client secret for the build environment.

Groups can be configured by stable id or exact displayName. Group IDs are recommended. If a displayName lookup finds no groups or multiple groups, the connector fails and asks you to use the group ID.

Selected groups become EventCatalog teams. Team IDs use alias when provided, otherwise they are slugified from the Entra group display name. Only direct user members are synced. Disabled users are excluded by default; set includeDisabledUsers: true to include them.

microsoftEntraDirectory({
  tenantId: process.env.AZURE_TENANT_ID,
  clientId: process.env.AZURE_CLIENT_ID,
  clientSecret: process.env.AZURE_CLIENT_SECRET,
  groups: [{ id: "00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000" }],
  includeDisabledUsers: true,
  graphBaseUrl: "https://graph.microsoft.com/v1.0",
  tokenUrl: "https://login.microsoftonline.com/<tenant-id>/oauth2/v2.0/token",
});

External directory sources require EventCatalog Scale when loaded by EventCatalog.

Custom directory sources can use the same contract:

import { defineDirectorySource } from "@eventcatalog/connectors";

export const companyDirectory = defineDirectorySource({
  type: "directory",
  name: "company-directory",

  async loadTeams() {
    return [
      {
        id: "platform",
        name: "Platform",
        members: ["alice"],
        source: {
          provider: "company-directory",
        },
      },
    ];
  },

  async loadUsers() {
    return [
      {
        id: "alice",
        name: "Alice",
        avatarUrl: "https://example.com/alice.png",
        source: {
          provider: "company-directory",
        },
      },
    ];
  },
});
