Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Overview

Fewu is automatic static blog site generator. It's designed as fixed, time-saving, random-less, which means the same configuration should have the same result everywhere.

Note: GitHub Releases is no longer used after REL3.2.2 (Jan 6, 2025). You should download from npm if you want tarballs.

Note: package fewu (without scoping) has not received updates for about 1 year. It is confirmed deprecated on May 24, 2026 with last dev update 3.7.81. The last stable update it received is 3.3.4. You should switch to @fewu-swg/fewu (it's automatically done if you are using fewu-cli, just update this package).

Using

Dependencies

  • node.js >= 16 (If you need hot-reloading for articles, node.js >= 20)
  • npm or pnpm

pnpm is officially supported, every feature related to local packages will be only tested on pnpm.

Deploying

  1. Download CLI tool
pnpm install fewu-cli
  1. Generate initial workspace
pnpm fewu init

Usually you only have to run this command once. Running repeatedly is not fully tested but should have no bad effect.

  1. (Optional) Write a post
pnpm fewu new
  1. Generate website
pnpm fewu

If a generated page is completely same as previous, it will skip IO.

  1. You site is on public (default output directory)

Advanced options

If you encounter issues that the program stuck at startup, or some plugins are not detected, you may try add argument --experimental-npm, which calls npm directly to get all packages.

Fewu has a built-in live server but not enabled by default. you can add argument --server to enable this feature. Once enabled, it will force the public directory to temp file directory (e.g. /tmp in linux), and after deployment, a server will be setup and you can view your website in localhost:3000 (default port).

Hot-reloading for posts/articles and theme layout & theme resource is supported. It will automatically enable/disable regarding on whether the runtime supports file watching. By default, for Node.js it's first version supporting this feature is Node.js 20

Configuration

Modify config.yaml.

Multiple configuration is supported by specifying which configuration will be used in current deploy by console argument --config $CONFIG_FILE.

Develop your theme

See Theme Document

Contribution & Hacking

For maintaining issues, any PR will not be merged, you can open an issue if you want some new features or you found bugs.

Note that almost all things can be done with theme scripting (For example, the default theme adds a permalink with title feature by modifying data in theme scripts), so features that is achievable by outside scripting might not be considered.

However you can fork this repository and add features in your own.

[!NOTE]

  • GitHub Releases is no longer used after REL3.2.2 (Jan 6, 2025) because it's functionality is almost a partial duplicate of npm. You should download from npm if you want executable things, and it resolves dependencies.

  • Package fewu (without scoping) has been deprecated for about 1 year. The final update it received is 3.7.81 (with notice patch). Last stable update it received is 3.3.4. You should switch to fewu-cli for CLI, or @fewu-swg/fewu for the core functions.
