Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Nunjucks + Pagedata for Arcitect

This library assists in loading nunjucks views, helpers and static assets.

Installation

Run npm install @firstandthird/arc-nunjucks in your http route directory.

Render

Example http route:

process.env.VIEWS_PATH = '/main/views';
process.env.SHARED_PATH = '/main/shared';

const arcJucks = require('@firstandthird/arc-nunjucks');

exports.handler = async function http(req) {
  if (req.path !== '/') {
    return {
      statusCode: '404',
      headers: { 'content-type': 'text/html; charset=utf8' },
      // will try to render /main/views/not-found.njk with the indicated context:
      body: await arcJucks.render('not-found', { attemptedPath: req.path })
    }
  }

  return {
    headers: { 'content-type': 'text/html; charset=utf8' },
    // will try to render /main/views/homepage.njk with the indicated context:
    body: await arcJucks.render('homepage', { userName: 'karen' })
  };
}

Helpers

Example use of custom filters:

/main/views/helpers/shorten.js:

// a standard nunjucks filter:
module.exports = function(str, count) {
  return str.slice(0, count || 5);
};```

#### /main/views/shorten.njk:
```nunjucks
hi there <b> {{name|shorten}} </b>
/src/shared/route.js
process.env.VIEWS_PATH = '/main/views';
process.env.SHARED_PATH = '/main/shared';
const arcJucks = require('@firstandthird/arc-nunjucks');
exports.handler = async function http(req) {
  return {
    headers: { 'content-type': 'text/html; charset=utf8' },
    // will try to render /main/views/homepage.njk with the indicated context:
    body: await arcJucks.render('shorten', { userName: 'karenwestington' })
  };
}
will render as:
  hi there <b> karen </b>
Static Assets:
arc.codes will upload static assets (listed in the public/ directory) and host them on s3 in the respective production/staging server. arc-nunjucks provides a static filter that will handle mapping the asset name to either the file location (in local mode) or to the appropriate URL on s3 (when in staging or production mode):
{
  "/homepageStyle": "/s3/bucket1/folder1/style.css"
}
The asset can now be referred to from within your nunjucks views:
load this css: {{ asset("/homepageStyle")}}
This will always load the correct location for the CSS whether in local, staging or production mode.
