Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

FlipFlag React

React bindings for FlipFlag — feature flags and remote configuration for React and Next.js applications.

Built on top of @flipflag/sdk, this package provides idiomatic React APIs: providers, hooks, and safe client-side defaults.

Features

  • React-first API (Provider, hooks)
  • Works with React 18+ and Next.js (App & Pages Router)
  • Safe by default for the browser (public key only)
  • Automatic re-rendering on flag updates
  • Optional SSR-friendly bootstrapping
  • Full TypeScript support
  • Zero config required on the client

Installation

npm install @flipflag/react @flipflag/sdk
# or
yarn add @flipflag/react @flipflag/sdk

react and @flipflag/sdk are declared as peer dependencies.

Core Concepts

  • FlipFlagProvider
    Owns a single FlipFlag manager instance and handles lifecycle (init, polling, destroy).

  • Hooks (useFlag, useFlags)
    Read feature flags reactively inside components.

  • Client-safe by default
    Designed to run in the browser using a public key only.

Quick Start (React)

import { FlipFlagProvider, useFlag } from "@flipflag/react";

function NewNavbar() {
  const enabled = useFlag("new-navbar", false);

  return enabled ? <div>New navbar</div> : <div>Old navbar</div>;
}

export function App() {
  return (
    <FlipFlagProvider
      options={{
        publicKey: "YOUR_PUBLIC_KEY",
      }}
    >
      <NewNavbar />
    </FlipFlagProvider>
  );
}

Next.js (App Router)

app/providers.tsx

"use client";

import { FlipFlagProvider } from "@flipflag/react";

export function Providers({ children }: { children: React.ReactNode }) {
  return (
    <FlipFlagProvider
      options={{
        publicKey: process.env.NEXT_PUBLIC_FLIPFLAG_PUBLIC_KEY!,
        ignoreMissingConfig: true
      }}
    >
      {children}
    </FlipFlagProvider>
  );
}

app/layout.tsx

import { Providers } from "./providers";

export default function RootLayout({
  children,
}: {
  children: React.ReactNode;
}) {
  return (
    <html>
      <body>
        <Providers>{children}</Providers>
      </body>
    </html>
  );
}

Hooks API

useFlag(name, fallback?)

Returns a boolean feature flag value.

const enabled = useFlag("checkout-v2");

With fallback:

const enabled = useFlag("checkout-v2", false);

useFlags(names, fallback?)

Read multiple flags at once.

const flags = useFlags(["checkout-v2", "new-navbar"] as const);

flags["checkout-v2"];
flags["new-navbar"];

useFlipFlagReady()

Check SDK initialization state.

const { ready, error } = useFlipFlagReady();

if (!ready) return <Spinner />;
if (error) return <ErrorState />;

Provider Options

export type FlipFlagReactOptions = {
  publicKey: string;
  privateKey?: string;              // ⚠️ server-only
  apiUrl?: string;
  configPath?: string;
  ignoreMissingConfig?: boolean;
  refreshIntervalMs?: number;        // default: 10_000
  initialFlags?: Record<string, boolean>;
};
