Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

@floralink/plugin-germansl

This is a Floralink plugin for GermanSL (v1.5.6), a taxon reference list for occurrence databases in Germany, licensed under CC-BY 4.0.

Jansen, F. & Dengler, J. (2008): GermanSL - eine universelle taxonomische Referenzliste für Vegetationsdatenbanken. Tuexenia 28: 239–253. Online version (in German)

Groups in this plugin

| Name | Type | Description | | ----------------- | -------- | ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | germansl | Taxon | Taxon reference for plants, mosses, algae and lichens in Germany | | ellenberg1991 | Traits | Ellenberg indicator values | | frankklotz1990 | Traits | Classification of hemeroby | | fukarekhenker2006 | Traits | N, F and T status described by Fukarek & Henker | | roteliste-mv-1991 | Traits | Red list classifications for vascular plants in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany | | roteliste-mv-2005 | Traits | Red list classifications for vascular plants in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany |

GermanSL taxon reference

Comma in vernacular name

Some values have their first adjective name part or their rank in parentheses behind a comma, for example "Schöterich (Unterart), Acker-" or "Breitblättrige Ständelwurz, Runde". Some use commas to seperate two or more names (e.g. "Kleiner Wiesenknopf, Kleine Bibernelle", "Strand-Aster, Salz-Aster, Pannonien-Salzaster"). Since both variants are used, they can't be distinguished and rearranged automatically.

Pre-processing

The original SQLite database in germansl.sqlite is converted to CSV via the SQLite command line interface, before it is mapped to JSON with @floralink/generator.

sqlite> .open germansl.sqlite
sqlite> .headers on
sqlite> .mode csv
sqlite> .output germansl.csv
sqlite> SELECT * FROM GermanSL;
sqlite> .quit

Indicator values (Ellenberg 1991)

Original source

Ellenberg, H. (1991): Zeigerwerte von Pflanzen in Mitteleuropa, Scripta geobotanica 18: 9-166. Goltze: Göttingen.

The property descriptions follow a more recent edition:

Ellenberg, Heinz, Leuschner, Christoph, Dierschke, Hartmut (2010): Vegetation Mitteleuropas mit den Alpen: in ökologischer, dynamischer und historischer Sicht. Stuttgart: Verlag Eugen Ulmer

Pre-processing

The original dBASE (.dbf) file was pre-processed by saving it as an semicolon-delimited CSV with LibreOffice (v7.2.2.2), before it is mapped to JSON with @floralink/generator.

$ npx flgen -i source/ecodbase.csv -d ";"

Harmonization

If the value for an indicator is "x" or "?", this is normally specified in an extra comment field and the field value is set as "0". However, this rule seems to be used inconsistently. In this plugin's database, a "0" is also understood to mean "x" if there is no other known value comment in the corresponding comment field and "0" is not a possible enumeration of that field. That would be the case for the salt indicator.
