Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

'@fnet/checksum' Project Analysis

The '@fnet/checksum' project is a source code that allows end-users to generate a checksum (hash based cryptography). The checksum serves as a unique identifier for a piece of data, in the sense that, if even a single element of the data changes, the checksum will change as well. It ensures that the data was not modified during transmission or storage and helps in verifying data integrity.

Use of Cryptographic Algorithms

This project uses the 'sha256' cryptographic hash function by default. The Secure Hash Algorithm (SHA-256) produces an almost-unique, fixed size 256-bit hash, which is highly suitable for checksum operations.

Varieties of Checksum Calculations

The code has a number of methods for calculating checksums, depending on the type of data input:

  1. Checksums for Directory Content: The code gathers the information about each file in a specified directory, including any files in its subdirectories. Each file path is added to an array 'inputs'. Every file is then read and a checksum is calculated. The array of file path and hash is then sorted to preserve the alphabetical order. Finally, a unique checksum for the entire directory is produced.

  2. Checksum for Objects: The code calculates checksums for JavaScript objects. This includes nested objects and the objects containing strings or Buffers only.

  3. Checksum for Individual Files, Buffers, or Strings: The code can calculate a checksum for an individual file by reading the content of the file, converting it into a buffer and then generating a unique hash for it.

Error Validation

A key feature is its in-depth error validation. It checks the validity of users' input and can handle and inform about variety of errors, like invalid path, invalid content type, path is neither file nor directory, and no content or path provided etc.
