Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

@foresteam/json-selector

A simple utility library for deeply selecting or excluding fields from complex JSON-like objects with type safety, including support for nested arrays and objects.

Also includes integration with Zod to automatically generate selector schemas from Zod validation schemas for runtime selector validation.

Features

  • Deep field selection on nested objects and arrays
  • Exclude mode to remove specified fields instead of selecting
  • Type-safe selectors leveraging advanced TypeScript generics
  • Compatible with optional and nullable fields
  • Generates Zod selector schemas from your existing Zod schemas for runtime validation
  • Supports primitive fields, nested objects, arrays, and union types

Installation

npm install @foresteam/json-selector
# or
yarn add @foresteam/json-selector
# or
pnpm add @foresteam/json-selector

Examples

Selecting fields

import { DeepSelector, selectFields } from '@foresteam/json-selector';

interface User {
  id: number;
  name: string;
  email?: string;
  address: {
    city: string;
    zip: string;
  } | null;
  roles: {
    name: string;
    level: number;
  }[];
}

const user: User = {
  id: 1,
  name: 'Alice',
  email: '[email protected]',
  address: { city: 'Wonderland', zip: '12345' },
  roles: [
    { name: 'admin', level: 10 },
    { name: 'editor', level: 5 }
  ]
};

const selector: DeepSelector<User> = {
  name: true,
  address: { city: true },
  roles: { name: true }
};

const selected = selectFields(user, selector);
// Result:
// {
//   name: 'Alice',
//   address: { city: 'Wonderland' },
//   roles: [{ name: 'admin' }, { name: 'editor' }],
// }

Excluding fields

const excludeSelector: DeepSelector<User> = {
  email: false,
  address: { zip: false }
};

const result = selectFields(user, excludeSelector, { mode: 'exclude' });
// Result:
// {
//   id: 1,
//   name: 'Alice',
//   address: { city: 'Wonderland' },
//   roles: [
//     { name: 'admin', level: 10 },
//     { name: 'editor', level: 5 },
//   ],
// }

Generating Zod Selector Schemas

If you use Zod for schema validation, you can automatically generate a corresponding selector schema for runtime validation of selectors:

import { zodSchemaToDeepSelectorSchema } from '@foresteam/json-selector';
import { z } from 'zod';

const userSchema = z.object({
  id: z.number(),
  name: z.string(),
  email: z.string().optional(),
  address: z
    .object({
      city: z.string(),
      zip: z.string()
    })
    .nullable(),
  roles: z.array(
    z.object({
      name: z.string(),
      level: z.number()
    })
  )
});

const selectorSchema = zodSchemaToDeepSelectorSchema(userSchema);

// Now you can validate selector inputs:
selectorSchema.parse({ name: true, address: { city: true } }); // passes
selectorSchema.parse({ name: 'yes' }); // throws validation error
