Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

forkline --version
forkline completions bash

Supported Platforms

Pre-built binaries are available for:

| Platform | Architecture | libc | |----------|--------------|------| | macOS | arm64 (Apple Silicon) | — | | macOS | x64 (Intel) | — | | Linux | arm64 | glibc | | Linux | arm64 | musl (Alpine) | | Linux | x64 | glibc (Debian/Ubuntu) | | Linux | x64 | musl (Alpine) | | Windows | arm64 | — | | Windows | x64 | — |

Environment Variables

FORKLINE_BINARY

Override the binary path. Useful for testing or using a custom build:

export FORKLINE_BINARY=/path/to/custom/forkline
forkline --version

Manual Binary Installation

If npm installation fails or you need a specific platform binary:

  1. Download the appropriate archive from GitHub Releases
  2. Extract the forkline binary
  3. Set FORKLINE_BINARY to point to it

Shell completions

Enable completions with one command (auto-detects your shell):

forkline completions install

Or specify a shell explicitly:

forkline completions install zsh
forkline completions install bash
forkline completions install fish

Manual installation (if completions install doesn't work for your setup):

# zsh (oh-my-zsh)
mkdir -p "${ZSH_CUSTOM:-$HOME/.oh-my-zsh/custom}/completions"
forkline completions zsh > "${ZSH_CUSTOM:-$HOME/.oh-my-zsh/custom}/completions/_forkline"
exec zsh

# zsh (plain — user directory)
mkdir -p ~/.zfunc && forkline completions zsh > ~/.zfunc/_forkline
# Add to ~/.zshrc (fpath BEFORE compinit):
# fpath=($HOME/.zfunc $fpath)
# autoload -Uz compinit && compinit

# bash (per-user)
mkdir -p ~/.local/share/bash-completion/completions
forkline completions bash > ~/.local/share/bash-completion/completions/forkline

# fish
mkdir -p ~/.config/fish/completions
forkline completions fish > ~/.config/fish/completions/forkline.fish

Supported shells: bash, zsh, fish, powershell, elvish. Run forkline completions <shell> to print the script to stdout.

Troubleshooting

"Platform package not installed"

This usually means npm was run with --no-optional. Reinstall without that flag:

npm install @forkline/cli

Or download the binary manually and use FORKLINE_BINARY.

"Permission denied"

The binary needs execute permissions:

chmod +x node_modules/@forkline/cli-linux-x64-gnu/bin/forkline

(Adjust platform package name as needed)
