Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

@fossil-design/react

v0.5.1

Published

React components for Fossil Design, styled only with design tokens and precompiled to plain JavaScript and one stylesheet.

Readme

@fossil-design/react

React components for Fossil Design, an open-source agentic design system. Their props take token keys and variant names, never raw values, so code written with them stays on-system.

Early release. Versions 0.x may change component APIs between minor versions while the library is built out. The release notes list each change.

Install

npm install @fossil-design/react

React 18.3 or 19 is a peer dependency. Import the stylesheet once, at your app's root. It already holds the token values, so your app needs no CSS tooling of its own:

import '@fossil-design/react/style.css';

No fonts are included. The text styles name Space Grotesk, Space Mono and Figtree, which are on Google Fonts; load them, or point the font tokens at your own faces (@fossil-design/tokens).

Use it

import { Box, Stack, Text } from '@fossil-design/react';

export function Note() {
  return (
    <Box
      as="article"
      surface="surface"
      padding={{ default: 'm', tablet: 'l' }}
      radius="surface"
    >
      <Stack gap="xs">
        <Text as="h2" variant="heading-s">
          Release notes
        </Text>
        <Text tone="muted">Spacing, colour and type all come from tokens.</Text>
      </Stack>
    </Box>
  );
}

| Component | What it does | | ---------------- | -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | Box | The base layout element. padding, paddingBlock, paddingInline and gap take space tokens; display, flexDirection, alignItems and justifyContent take keywords. Each can change per breakpoint, mobile first: { default, tablet, compact, large, max }. surface sets a fill and its contrast-checked text colour together. There is no margin prop | | Stack | A Box in a row or a column, spaced by gap | | Text | Text in one of the token text styles. A heading style needs as, so the outline is always chosen | | Button | A native button: tone primary or secondary, size s or m, text, an icon and text, or an icon alone with a label. Size m is at least a 44px target | | Link | A link with a dotted underline that fills in on hover and focus. A new tab gets an outward arrow and says so to screen readers. asChild styles a router's link, or a button for an action that reads like a link | | Card | A bordered surface for one of a set of parallel pieces of content, with an optional title at a heading level you choose | | Figure | Frames your image or video, and ties an optional caption to it | | Icon | An icon, decorative unless it has a label. Takes one of Fossil's icons, such as CloseIcon, or any SVG component of your own | | SkipLink | Lets keyboard users jump past the navigation; hidden until focused | | VisuallyHidden | Text for assistive technology only | | Modal | A modal dialog on native <dialog>: focus on the title, Escape and a click outside close it, and the page behind stays still. renderPanel lets an animation library run the panel | | Tabs | Tabs as a segmented control under their panel, with arrow keys, Home and End | | Carousel | A scrolling, snapping row of cards, with buttons or dots that appear only when the cards overflow | | Popover | A panel beside its trigger, for content that may be interactive; not modal | | Tooltip | A short label shown on hover and focus, dismissed with Escape | | Clip | A silent, looping video with the play and pause toggle WCAG 2.2.2 asks for; paused for readers who prefer reduced motion |

Each component exports its variants as a constant, such as textVariants, for docs and tools to read.

Docs for agents

The package carries its own docs, in node_modules/@fossil-design/react/docs/, so a coding agent reads the version you installed rather than its training data. index.md lists every component; foundations.md has the rules, the escape hatches and the token scales; each component's file says when to use it and when not to, its states, its accessibility, its props and examples. components.json and tokens.json hold the same as JSON.

Point your agent at them with the package's bin, from your app's root:

npx fossil-agents-md

It writes Fossil's rules, the token scales, the components and the paths to their docs into your AGENTS.md, between <!-- BEGIN:fossil-design-agent-rules --> and <!-- END:fossil-design-agent-rules -->, and adds @AGENTS.md to your CLAUDE.md if you have one. Run it again after upgrading; it replaces only the block. npx fossil-agents-md --check changes nothing, and fails when the block is out of date, for CI.

Figma Make

Install @fossil-design/react in the Make file. Before the first prompt, create Guidelines.md in the file's guidelines/ folder, which a new Make file has empty, with this one line:

Read node_modules/@fossil-design/react/guidelines/Guidelines.md before writing any code, and follow it.

The package's own guidelines set up the stylesheet and the fonts, tell Make to skip its scaffold's Tailwind classes, then route it through the docs. They match the version installed. In a Make kit, the kit's Guidelines.md is the same line.

Icons

Fossil ships the Material Symbols its components use, as React components: ArrowOutwardIcon, ChevronLeftIcon, ChevronRightIcon, CloseIcon, PauseIcon and PlayArrowIcon. They are © Google, under the Apache License 2.0, included as dist/licenses/material-symbols.txt. For any other icon, pass your own SVG component to Icon.
