Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

Documentation: docs.g14o.dev/packages/ratelimit-nextjs

Next.js rate limiting with Upstash Redis. Typed for NextRequest / NextResponse route handlers; delegates to @g14o/ratelimit at runtime.

Install

pnpm add @g14o/ratelimit-nextjs @upstash/redis @upstash/ratelimit next

@upstash/redis and @upstash/ratelimit are optional peers (in-memory fallback without Redis). next is required.

Setup

Create an app-owned client in lib/rate-limit.ts:

import { createRateLimit } from "@g14o/ratelimit-nextjs";
import { env } from "@/lib/env";

export const { withRateLimit, checkRateLimit, withUserRateLimit } =
  createRateLimit({
    redis: {
      url: env.UPSTASH_REDIS_REST_URL,
      token: env.UPSTASH_REDIS_REST_TOKEN,
    },
    verbose: true,
  });

Examples

App Router route

import { NextResponse } from "next/server";
import { withRateLimit } from "@/lib/rate-limit";

export const POST = withRateLimit(
  async (req) => NextResponse.json({ ok: true }),
  { tier: "moderate" }
);

Per-user limits

Use a verified identity from your auth provider — not client-controlled headers.

import { NextResponse } from "next/server";
import { withUserRateLimit } from "@/lib/rate-limit";
import { getSession } from "@/lib/auth";

export const POST = withUserRateLimit(
  async (req) => NextResponse.json({ ok: true }),
  async (req) => {
    const session = await getSession(req);
    return session?.user.id ?? null;
  },
  { tier: "write" }
);

Build vs runtime

During next build, limits use an in-memory backend by default (inMemoryDuringBuild: true). At runtime in production, Upstash Redis is required.

Import isBuildLikePhase() from @g14o/ratelimit/config if you need to detect build phase yourself.

Framework alternatives

For Web Request/Response runtimes without Hono, use @g14o/ratelimit directly.

For Express, use @g14o/ratelimit-express.

For Hono, use @g14o/ratelimit-hono.

Import map

| Use case | Import | |----------|--------| | Rate limit factory | import { createRateLimit } from "@g14o/ratelimit-nextjs" | | Custom store helpers | import { createStore, defineStore } from "@g14o/ratelimit-nextjs" | | In-memory store | import { memoryStore } from "@g14o/ratelimit-nextjs/memory" | | Upstash store | import { upstashStore } from "@g14o/ratelimit-nextjs/upstash" | | Redis store (node-redis / ioredis) | import { redisStore } from "@g14o/ratelimit/redis" | | Redis / env helpers | import { createRedisClient, isBuildLikePhase } from "@g14o/ratelimit/config" |
