Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

React panels for a GBA debugger — screen with gamepad and audio, palette, tiles, tilemaps, sprites, I/O registers, trace, events, memory search, labels, save states, input recordings — over a transport an editor or a web page provides

@gba-kit/debug-ui

The debugger panels an editor has no native view for, as React components:

| Panel | What it shows | | ------------------- | ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- | | ScreenPanel | the display; keyboard and gamepad input; audio; run/pause, frame step, rewind, record | | PalettePanel | the 256 background and 256 sprite colors, with index, RGB and BGR555 of the one under the mouse | | TilesPanel | the tiles of any character base at 4 or 8 bpp, painted with a palette bank | | TilemapPanel | a background's map rendered from its tiles, with the entry under the mouse | | SpritesPanel | OAM as a table, each sprite painted, in 1D or 2D mapping | | IoRegistersPanel | the display, sound-control, DMA, timer, keypad, interrupt and system registers, fields decoded | | TracePanel | the instruction trace ring | | EventsPanel | the hardware event log: VBlank, HBlank, interrupts, DMA, I/O writes, halts | | MemorySearchPanel | find a value in RAM and narrow the candidates as it changes | | LabelsPanel | names for addresses the ELF does not name; import .sym files, export | | SaveStatesPanel | save and load states | | RecordingPanel | record the buttons pressed, replay them, read them as a script |

DebugPanels puts them behind tabs. Everything talks to the debugger through a Transport, which the panels never look behind: the VS Code extension implements it with postMessage to the extension host (createMessageTransport on the webview side, serveTransport on the host side — importable alone from @gba-kit/debug-ui/transport, so a host that only routes messages bundles no React), the webapp with direct calls into a @gba-kit/debug-core session (createSessionTransport). The request vocabulary is @gba-kit/debug-core/protocol; nothing here imports the Node debug adapter. A transport may also offer showPanel — the Screen panel uses it when a recording stops, so the Recording tab (which lists the last twenty recordings the session kept, whoever stopped them) comes up instead of a text editor.

Usage

import { DebugPanels, ScreenPanel, createSessionTransport } from '@gba-kit/debug-ui';
import '@gba-kit/debug-ui/styles.css';

const transport = createSessionTransport(session); // a @gba-kit/debug-core Session

<div className="gk-root">
  <ScreenPanel transport={transport} scale={3} />
  <DebugPanels transport={transport} panels={['io', 'palette', 'tiles', 'sprites']} />
</div>;

The stylesheet is driven by --gk-* custom properties declared on .gk-root (background, foreground, accent, fonts). A host paints the panels in its theme by overriding them; the VS Code extension maps them to --vscode-* colors.

Develop

pnpm --filter @gba-kit/debug-ui build
pnpm --filter @gba-kit/debug-ui test

The tests need no browser: the transport plumbing, the pixel helpers, the key maps and the presentational views (rendered to HTML) are checked in Node, and the in-process transport is exercised against a real session on the @gba-kit/debug-core fixtures.
