Optimize Toolset

I’ve always been into building performant and accessible sites, but lately I’ve been taking it extremely seriously. So much so that I’ve been building a tool to help me optimize and monitor the sites that I build to make sure that I’m making an attempt to offer the best experience to those who visit them. If you’re into performant, accessible and SEO friendly sites, you might like it too! You can check it out at Optimize Toolset.

About

Hi, 👋, I’m Ryan Hefner  and I built this site for me, and you! The goal of this site was to provide an easy way for me to check the stats on my npm packages, both for prioritizing issues and updates, and to give me a little kick in the pants to keep up on stuff.

As I was building it, I realized that I was actually using the tool to build the tool, and figured I might as well put this out there and hopefully others will find it to be a fast and useful way to search and browse npm packages as I have.

If you’re interested in other things I’m working on, follow me on Twitter or check out the open source projects I’ve been publishing on GitHub.

I am also working on a Twitter bot for this site to tweet the most popular, newest, random packages from npm. Please follow that account now and it will start sending out packages soon–ish.

Open Software & Tools

This site wouldn’t be possible without the immense generosity and tireless efforts from the people who make contributions to the world and share their work via open source initiatives. Thank you 🙏

A parser for BNF and EBNF grammars used by jison.

install

npm install @gerhobbelt/ebnf-parser

or the entire bundle via

npm install jison-gho

Then the ebnf-parser library is located in the subdirectory packages/ebnf-parser/ of the jison-gho monorepo, i.e. .../node_modules/jison-gho/packages/ebnf-parser/.

Alternatively, the entire ebnf-parser API is also available via the jison API itself as can be seen from this internal jison code snippet:

import Lexer from '../packages/jison-lex';
import ebnfParser from '../packages/ebnf-parser';
import lexParser from '../packages/lex-parser';
import grammarPrinter from './util/grammar-printer.js';
import helpers from '../packages/helpers-lib';
var rmCommonWS = helpers.rmCommonWS;
var camelCase  = helpers.camelCase;
var code_exec  = helpers.exec;
import XRegExp from '@gerhobbelt/xregexp';
import recast from '@gerhobbelt/recast';
import astUtils from '@gerhobbelt/ast-util';
import json5 from '@gerhobbelt/json5';

// Also export other APIs: the JISON module should act as a 'facade' for the others,
// so applications using the JISON compiler itself can rely on it providing everything
// in a guaranteed compatible version as it allows userland code to use the precise
// same APIs as JISON will be using itself:
Jison.Lexer = Lexer;
Jison.ebnfParser = ebnfParser;
Jison.lexParser = lexParser;
Jison.codeExec = code_exec;
Jison.XRegExp = XRegExp;
Jison.recast = recast;
Jison.astUtils = astUtils;
Jison.JSON5 = json5;
Jison.prettyPrint = grammarPrinter;
Jison.rmCommonWS = rmCommonWS;
Jison.mkStdOptions = mkStdOptions;
Jison.camelCase = camelCase;
Jison.autodetectAndConvertToJSONformat = autodetectAndConvertToJSONformat;
...
Jison.Parser = Parser;

export default Jison;

hence you can get at it this way, for example:

import jisonAPI from 'jison-gho';
// get a reference to the full `ebnf-parser` API:
const ebnfParserAPI = jisonAPI.ebnfParser;

build

Follow the install & build directions of the monorepo.

You can also only build this particular subpackage by cd-ing into this directory and then invoking the local make:

cd packages/ebnf-parser
make

This will generate parser.js, transform-parser.js and the rollup/babel-postprocessed ES6 and ES5 compatible libraries in the local dist/ directory.

usage

The parser translates a string grammar or JSON grammar into a JSON grammar that jison can use (ENBF is transformed into BNF).

var ebnfParser = require('@gerhobbelt/ebnf-parser');

// parse a bnf or ebnf string grammar
ebnfParser.parse("%start ... %");

// transform an ebnf JSON gramamr
ebnfParser.transform({"ebnf": ...});

example grammar

The parser can parse its own BNF grammar, shown below:

%start spec

// %parse-param options

/* grammar for parsing jison grammar files */

%{
var fs = require('fs');
var transform = require('./ebnf-transform').transform;
var ebnf = false;
var XRegExp = require('xregexp'); // for helping out the `%options xregexp` in the lexer
%}
